has anyone used these?

i continue on my RTW and this would make life easier for oil changes but not if it will create problems

Those filters are chinese and probably crap? All I know about metal gauze filters is that they were popular in cars in the sixties like early minis, washable in petrol and reusable, but they didn't work too well only filtering particles to 50 microns at best and were quickly changed over to paper. They have been known to fall apart too, certainly the modern the CRT brand ones do anyway! Modern metal gauzes will perhaps do 30 microns, but that'll still mean a lot of sh1t will be getting through. A decent paper filter, such as a K&N or Hi-Flo will do down to 10 microns or and some down to 7.

I'd agree. The only things I've seen with gauze filters also have 1000 mile oil-change intervals. I'd be very wary of using one in a Tenere.

Remember that the Yam service schedule is only to do the filter every 12,000 miles (every other oil change). Now I tend to do mine every time I change the oil because it's only a few quid, but it's not essential.

I'd carry a spare, because they're pretty light and there's always the chance that you'll do something dumb like take your bike swimming (ask me how I know). But in terms of replenishing your spare, or routine servicing, I'd be pretty happy to assume I'd pass a Yamaha dealer at least every 12k miles.

Maybe adopt the "never pass a petrol station" approach? Every 6k if you can buy a filter then change it, so you've always got 12k "in the bank" for the odd occasion you can't.

Worst case, a filter is light enough to FedEx without costing ridiculous money.

The filters are the same as the 600 Tenere/TTR motors, so finding one shouldn't cause a serious problem, and as Uberthumper says, it's 12k between filter changes (baring sub-aqua excursions).

I'd take a spare (wrapped in cling-film and in a bag), and if you use it, the replace it as soon as possible.
