Engine overhaul
The oil consumption of my Tenere becomes annoyingly high (1L/1500km after 105.000km). So I am looking into the possibilities of replacement parts.
I expect that I have to replace the piston, rings and valve stem seals, top and bottom gasket. Yamaha parts cost like 350 euro. Does anybody have experience with replacing these (maybe on a XT660X or R). Do I need to hone the cylinder before putting in a new Also looking into the bigger bore of Off-The-Road, 700cc sounds nice , experience somebody? Parts cost approx. the same as Yamaha's but bored out cylinder is an extra 289 euro. |
I would say you would need a rebore at that mileage.
Get your cylinder bored to a 102mm, then use a CP 11.5:1 piston for a Raptor 700. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Raptor-700-102mm-11-5-1-CP-TECH-piston-Kit-PUMP-GAS-/110709467696?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&vxp=m tr&hash=item19c6cc6a30 Or with gaskets. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Raptor-700-102mm-11-5-1-CP-TECH-piston-Kit-Gaskets-/110709467661?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&vxp=m tr&hash=item19c6cc6a0d |
Thanx, that looks very good.

If you use the Raptor 700 piston use the Raptor head gasket & the XT660 base gasket.
You can get cheaper pistons, but I would only use a CP piston as it has a longest piston skirt & will last linger than the Wisco & JE pistons. |
The anwer to my question I did not asked yet :)
About the cylinder, can a normal rebuilding company bore it up. Or should it be something special because of the Nicasil? |

I am using it for commuting, 170km a day. Right now I have to fill up every week which is starting to annoy me. For the rest no problems and it runs like it is virgin.
|
The bore will need to be bored to 102mm & replated with Nicasil

Finally did the repairs. After 130.000km the piston-cilinder play was still within its limits. Replaced the piston rings and valve seals.

It is running like new. Curious to see what the oil consumption became. This weekend new oil and filter and then up to 200.000km.
|
Amazing, Niek. It's a credit to you that the bike is lasting so well. What oil are you using, and what are your service intervals?
Anyway, good for you. Excellent. |
:laughing6::laughing6: I always used mineral 10W40 of various producers. When the bike started to consume lots of oil (around 100.000km) I switched to the cheapest oil I could find, car oil 10W40 from Action and I did not change it, just topped it up. The last month 2x a week. Kept changing the filter every 20.000km.

That is amazing. Clearly I am over-servicing my bike. I think I will have to reform.
Maybe one of your secrets is the long distances you do every day. I am extremely impressed that you do so in weather that would have me trembling and semi-frozen. And complaining a lot. Legend. |
I just see it as my daily adventure. One adventure a day keeps the doctor away (from my bike and me)
|
I think you're right! But, as I said mate: Legend.

Ive read some high milage stories and most of them never stuck to orginial service plan the manufacturer laid down and most lengthened oil changes and filter changes and play it by eye/ear to what the bike is telling them the higher the milage they go. But i agree i think its alot down to the big miles per day you do, meaning the engine etc all get more time to warm up and put the miles on when its warm etc etc where as over here in uk we general do shorter runs meaning more stop starts for the engine, more labour, more cold time etc.
But keep us informed as ive just agreed money on a tenere (use to have XTR) and reason why i wanted it was to hold on and do high miles, back to more servicing of the bike myself (havent really done much servicing myself on tiger 1050 part from top oil, adjust chain etc), slow me down again (Tiger and me like the faster speeds!!!) also the off roading capabilities of the tenere are a bit higher than Tiger 1050 |

Did you end up re-nicasil the cylinder? What did you do to the cylinder before putting it back, hone, etc? |
The piston was still within spec, so no new piston nor replating of the cylinder. The original hone traces were still visible.
Oil consumption became insignificant in between the oil changes. |
Interesting. I ride mine very gently and mostly for commuting. 40 000 miles on now and ive only topped it up once (maybe twice) since 29 000 .
