quıck questıon on draın collector mcthıngy

It is oil.....

There is a vent system from the crankcase to the airbox, the drain pipe is the oil that is blown into the airbox.

It always looks more than it is, or rather it looks worse than it is,,,,, I think..

I keep an eye on mine, and measure it(roughly) as I drain it, then put the same amount into the top Oil tank (at the steering head), just to keep thinks ticketybooo. Not really much need realy, but in the event it starts blowing more out, at least I'm replacing it and I'll be aware of a developing problem.

There are plenty of post on the forum about it, some people don't care, some are looking to fit super dooper air-lock-thingamawatsists so when they next ride into a 5 foot puddle it doesn't back fill into the crank.

I fall into both camps :D

I drain the tube when I change the oil, it doesn't spit enough through the breather between services to change the oil level significantly. So I don't care.

I am concerned about filling my crankcases with muddy water. At least concerned enough that spending a few quid on a couple of metres of hose seems like a good investment.

First off, when you checked the oil, did you follow the instructions in the owners handbook ? I ask because these bikes have a semi-dry sump, and if the bike has been standing then all the oil empties from the tank into the sump. When the bike is running, the engine pumps the oil up into the oil tank.

Checking the oil catches so many people out.

Next, the drain tube had probably backed up into the air box, and it takes time for cold oil to drain, that's ' probably' why it took a few minutes.

Hi

I rode the bike for about 20 minutes until she was warm,
Let del for 15 seconds switched off waited two minutes then checked....

I have topped it up now and she seems fine

About the oil backingup into the air box is that somethng to worry about? And I'm not clear as to why so much oil came pouring out of the drain collector thing.... Surely it can't be right for that much to come out?

Thanks for all your replies btw! Much appreciated

Andy

It depends how much actually comes out when you drain it, I've had 1/4 litre before (long time between drains!) I reckon it would take close to a liter before it starts to damage the air filter.

If your bike is blowing lots of oil through, and you warrenty then get it looked at.
