Clunking between gears

Hi Chaps

Long time no been on here.

My XT660X is clunking on gear changes. 1st to 2nd is the most noticable and then less as it goes up through the gears.

Help

Have you made sure the gear levers pinch bolt is tight and the clutch cable is adjusted. If so have you changed to the way you ride the bike/change gear...you may need to change the position of the gear lever. Finally when did you last change the engine oil. Some times bikes that sit for a while can have engine oil go oil and cause different problems for different bikes.

Check your chain tension made a big difference on my XTZ

Mine XT660Z does the same. Seems it is related to sticky clutch. It helps if shifting is made the way which forces the clutch to break lose first. For example, not to close the throttle completely during shifting.

This phenomena seems to be more pronounced while riding in the relaxed manner. More sporty riders may never notice it at all.

Cheers Guys

As far as I can see the clutch cable is right and the chain is fine. I have just ordered some oil so I'll give it a complete change this week and see what happens.

I was also contemplating whether different oil can cure this. Please let us know if you will find out anything.

Hi,
I got the same on my XTZ. Never had it on the XTR. It only happens when changing gears under no load. The way around is to not close the throttle completely and not pull in the clutch fully.
The clonk is sometimes so loud people turn to look.
When pushed the gearbox is as smooth as anything.

My XTX is very noisy on gear change, 2nd to 3rd the loudest.
It gets quieter if the chain is too tight.
As said above, quick changes with clutch partly pulled seems to help. ;)

Actually seemed louder after new oil, so maybe different oils will have different results.

The oil is also very important and the wrong oil can cause problems with your clutch. Ensure that you use a good quality synthetic oil and it must be JASO approved. I have always used Castrol, I am sure that other good brands are fine, AVOID supermarket oils.
