Airfilter for really dusty driving.

Hello,

Performance of the DNA Stage 1+2 is really nice, but I'm a bit worried about the fine dust that will penetrate the filters. I would not like to go back to Yamaha filter + snorkel, just because of the surging issue, but I really would like to be able to drive in dusty environments too. It seems to be a general consensus that K&N and DNA style filters are no good for dusty conditions.

Is there an easy solution for this? Can I install a pipercross or similar filter for the off roady driving? How does XTZ solve this problem, I'm sure those have been driven through all the deserts in the world, so there must be a solution for this.

Or am I overreacting?

The DNA filters work fine in the dust. After 800 miles of the stuff last year (in one trip) the filter was still working fine. If you are concerned then give it a wash and re-oil on the road, it only takes 15 minutes.

Second GULGo's comment - BUT make sure you use the proper DNA cleaning kit - It has been stressed on many threads on here not to use the usual petrol/white spirits sort of stuff.....

or the K&N one work just the same, and is easier to source.

Sound advice there, but can I just add that you should remove both sides of your airbox and check the seals too. If they aren't seated correctly, dust can get in, with predicitable consequences!

I rode the K&N thousands of km through Africa, no problem. If you see the idle-ing rpm go down, it's dirty and needs to be cleaned, this was about every 2000 km. What made a big difference is the snorkel, I cut mine off, and my filter needed more cleaning than my friends with snorkel, it's especially bad when someone drives in front of you on the piste, so always drive first.:toothy5:

Oh, it seems that I forgot to mention that I'm driving XTX, but everything this far seems to support the fact that I could run my DNA Stage 1+2 just fine, even in Africa. I guess I'll just apply the cleaning/re-oil kit and keep driving with those.

Thanks everyone for quick and good feedback.

Dirty airfilter box

The LH side panel on the airbox has a seal , buy the LH side on my box doesnt,So I sealed it and added a YZ450 Quad airfilter over my std DNA filter as my bike started using oil.
But all too late,
My bike is in at the agents , 1 year old , 32 000km on the odo and they have had to replace my barrel and my piston from excessive wear caused by dust,

This is what I found at before 20 k

ound the answer to the excessive dust we ride in.
One of the Yamaha quads use a re-usable foam filter.
I bought a new one from Yamaha and they cut a section off the top and it fits over the DNA filter(oiled naturally ! )

I put red rubber greas on either side of the airbox covers to stop the dust coming in to the airbox,

My older bike , XT660R , I did 74 000km in 3 1/2 years and sold it as it had started using oil and I wheelied it every other day and still hsd the std clutch
This bike , XT660Z only 32 000 km and needs a barrel , piston and a clutch and since My accident last year , I havent wheelied this one yet !

I suppose the conclusion could be " Ride hard and wheelie a lot " to make your bike last longer !!!

HAVE A READ HERE BEFORE YOU THINK MY BIKE IS AN ISOLATED TENERE.

There are about 5 bikes in the Cape region alone that have suffered the same fate !

Lol !!!

Should be in the owners manual-
" Ride hard and wheelie a lot " to make your bike last longer !!!
I like it.

I don't worry about the dust so much, since I can see if the filter is dirty and I clean it. But I do worry about the fog. Here, in the place I live, at winters and in the early morning hours there's a lot of fog that after a ride of about 15 km to go to work the fog liquefies and stays on the bike, and the air filter too. What should I do? Get rid of the stage 2 filter during withers? What do you do in these foggy situations?

Fog, rain etc. and DNA stage 2.

Hi there. I do get rid of my Stage 2 for the autumn and early winter time. In Finland that means a lot of rain and cold weather. I'm probably just paranoid and even after driving in heavy rain there is no water in my air box even with stage 2. I have to store my bike out in the open and I do notice that I have to add a bit of oil to the lower part of the filter every now and then. It seems that sun + rain does wear the oil out faster.

Oh, location Kavala, if that's Kavala Finland, then you already know about finnish autumn :) Nice surroundings for the Yamaha, I've a lot of my best trips around those areas. The endless amounts of gravel road there is just motorcycling heaven for me.

It's Kavala in Greece :icon_thumleft:...Although in Greece, it's in the north part of it with lot of cold, rain and fog in winter...So, I think replacing back the stock airfilter cover woulb be a wise solution during those days..
