the spare connector block under the dash panal

Just fitting heated grips, considering options for connecting the live. There is a block connector under the plastic cover below the clocks. Not checked if its a switched live as yet but thats only a 2 min job tonight. anyone know what Yamahas intended use for this connector is?

Thanx

.was it for an after-market alarm or such?

Possibly, anyone confirm? got a great deal on the grips incidentally, ordered 24.99 dr bike ones as they look just like my oxford ones on the 955 sprint and the company sent me much more expensive oxford hot grips by mistake. Even says Dr bike 24.99 on the invoice. Oh how I laughed:smilies0345:

The general consensus on this little connector is that it is for a GPS (considering it's location close to the GPS mount). It is switched and I think someone traced out which circuit it is on.

Cheers, I will follow it back and see what fuse rating in in the circuit and what, if anything else is on there as the grips draw 4 amps.

Thanx

hi, the connector is part of the sidelight circuit, it is covered with a 10 amp fuse which is way more than the lights require and for that reason i believe it is an ignition controlled aux power source.

my hot grips and ciggy style gps/phone charger have been connected via a 7.5 fuse to the connector since i got the bike 26 months and 27,000 miles ago and have worked fine with no problems

Cheers Bernard

Thats it then, I will make the connection there this very night.

As Bernard suggests, you do need a correctly rated extra inline fuse so as to protect yourself from losing the tail light if your grips/gps malfunctions whilst on the move.

Also remember the supply will be live when the ignition is in the parking light position with the key removed, so there is potential to flatten your battery in double quick time if you forget and leave the grips switched on and do this. I know a fair few people (including me) who have walked off and left their bike in daylight without realising they'd turned the key round one notch too far - easily done!

i wired my oxford heated grip tho that connector and its pefect to hide all the wires too.

Gary117 04-03-11 17:40

I used that connection for my gps only.

Could someone please post a pic from the connector? I'm not sure which one you're talking about and I'm looking for a new power source to get my phone and spare batteries charged.

Thanks!

The black panel under the clocks, remove the 2 screws with the comp limiters on the lower corners. Pull the panel off and "hey presto" its right there before your very eyes. All you need is an allen key and 1 minute to get to it.

Spare electrical socket (Hitachi Type)

Hi guys, The socket you are referring to has had much discussion in the past and many explanations as to what it it is, many people have used it succesfully without any problems but if you find the old thread on this someone actually contacted Yamaha themselves to get to the bottom of it and were officially told that it is a " Diagnostic" connector ! after which many changed it back to the original socket after cutting there's off.
I would say that there is no problem utilising it with the correct connector (Hitachi Type: as per Demon Tweeks Catalogue) with an in-line fuse thereby allowing the option of the Diagnostics if required, hope this helps.

Do you have a link for the connector on the Demon Tweeks site, as I can't find it on there? Or is there a product code?

conector

I wouldn't mind the details for that too!

Titbird 16-03-11 08:18

My dealer told me it's a POWER-suply for the diagnostics tool, as I'm also using it for the GPS, he said if he needed it he would get power somewhere else.
So you see, it's not very clear as why it is there, but it's safe to use.

Peregrine 16-03-11 09:48

Hi Guys, i checked the Demon Tweeks (2010) catalogue for the Hitachi connectors they dont have a specific part no. it says they are available in a number of "ways" i.e 2,3,4,6 & 9 and are 2.99 each or 7.99 per pack of 3, they are on page 145 of the catalogue.
Hope this helps
Cheers

Still had no joy with the Demon Tweeks website, order the catalogue though so will see when it arrives.

Googled the connector and found one on ebay and another website, is this the right one though???

a +1 on that need to know! If it doesn't fit what's the best alternative a spade connector by itself?

Pleiades 17-03-11 19:39

I chopped the original connector off and used a two-way weather proof connector from here...

http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.e...connectors.php

These are very strong, totally vibration and water proof and don't need any special tools to fit. I'd avoid spade connectors, they suffer from water ingress, corrosion and fatigue in the wire where they crimp.

zakidos 19-03-11 15:49

Hi, I wanted to show you how I installed a USB power source using the spare connector under the dash panel.

First, I chopped off the original connector, because I couldn't find anything nice which would fit that original connector. I used as a replacement these Hitachi 2 way connector found on eBay.

At the end I have, thanks to BurnsMoto (!!), a waterproof USB power socket for charging my iPhone or spare batteries on the go ;-)

Cheers!

Just a quick one to say, I ordered and fitted the VWP like you suggested and it all works like a dream. Got a blade (maxi ) splash proof fuse holder from there too and now have my GPS and TT 12v socket wired up and with a nice in line fuse to boot!

Thank you very much!

Pleiades 19-04-11 21:57

Nice one. Glad to here you got it sorted.
