Need replacement tool kit

My XT660Z toolkit was stolen on my last trip, so I need to get some replacements. The local dealer has the standard Yamaha tool kit in stock but seeing as I don't use much of the bits and he wanted over 60 for it (!) I thought I would be a cheapskate and get what I need elsewhere.

The main thing is a spark plug wrench which the dealer doesn't sell by itself. Even with the OE wrench the plug is difficult to reach and turn, and I thought THIS ONE might be more suitable. But is it the right size?

I can't remember much of what else was in the kit. A 10mm (?) hex for adjusting the front forks, a couple of spanners for the chain, a screwdriver... What else was there?

hi Tim,

try this for your Z.... http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=8548

Bad luck on getting it stolen. One way to prevent this happening again (assuming it was in a tube?) is to actually have the toolkit in the bike. So, if you can create some extra storage space under the seat, or side panel, that would be useful.

Like this very clever mod... http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?...ighlight=GSTRY

I have the answer to the spark plug wrench, it is 16mm or 5/8".

Still don't know what's in the standard tool kit. :(

Thanks for that. I'd totally forgotten about the C spanner and wouldn't have remembered some of the other components.

I wonder what #9 is for?

(You can tell I'm not technical)

I think it is the extension handle for the C spanner...

To be honest, everything (except the combi 10x12mm spanner) in the stock tool kit is sh!t... the toe-rag did you a favor Tim!

There is a thread on here called Tools (which I think Molgan started), plus also my packing light thread with the contents of my trail tool kit...

But off the top of my head, I'd buy a Leatherman Kick (good blade and screwdrivers, but none of the other crap).

14mm Hex for the front axle.

22mm ring spanner (or socket) for the rear axle.

8/10/12/13/14/17 sockets should do everything on the bike (engine bolts the lot), plus a T-handle (folding if you want to fit it in the original toolkit space). You'll probably need a 3/8th drive for the 17 and 22mm sockets, but personally I like a 1/4 inch for the 8/10/12/13/14mm sockets...

a 10/12mm combi spanner - two if you must (for adjusting the chain), but I find one is sufficient if you've put copper-slip on the threads...

4/5/6mm allen keys.

Erm, that's it I think...

That little lot should still fit in the space in the tank the OEM kit went in.

ps. You've got the plug spanner size - it's the same as a Honda XR650R as I recall too x

I bought a cracker of a little 3/8th drive socket set for 30 that does all that and more.

Ok, it is a bit bulkier, but I have a ratchet too.

The ratchet fits in the dedicated tool area on my XTR.

I love Motion Pro stuff - their ring spanner/tyre levers are excellent (I have 3), and their chain tool is the best quality one out there...

However, the compact tool I'm not so sure about - it looks like something for bicycles rather than motorbikes?

If it works all well and good (I've not used one), but it seems fiddly, and personally I like to have a dedicated tool for each job (and one in each hand so to speak) - I just feel the pocket tool is too much of a compromise in that regard... that the 'tool' you want isn't in the right position to work with properly? (particularly for servicing type jobs), but hey, if it gets you going again thats all the matters!

(I just can't believe it has all the tools required to do every job on the Ten'?!)

A friend of mine has this set, and likes it very much... I'd dump the box and just put everything in a pouch (a Kriega 'Stash' wallet* works well as a compact tool kit btw.) and of course you can always buy extra 3/8th sockets for other jobs - such as a 14mm hex and a 22mm for the rear axle...

*Piglet has told me to remind you that you can actually get a great deal on a Kriega Stash wallet, Buff headscarf and limited edition "DNF AFU" JMo Racing T-shirt by visiting: www.jennydakar.com and checking out the merchandise page... but I would never be so obvious in my self-promotion... x

Not sure if it does everything but I have made a point of using it when doing jobs on the bike and I haven't needed anything else yet apart from my Leatherman.

The quality is second to none and I know what you mean about fiddly but you soon get the hank of it and it is suprisingly agile and comfortable in the hand. It is so small as well when packed up so could be complemented with other items easily. In this case a 'small tool' is good ahem!

Ps. Hope you are healing fast and free from pain Jen.:sunny:

Hee hee - set myself up for that one didn't I?!

I agree, that most jobs on bikes (including the Ten') require a flat and philips screwdriver, 4/5/6mm allen keys and 8/10/12mm sockets - all of which are in the Motion Pro tool, and as you say, together with a Leatherman type tool, will get you out of pretty much any fix - worth considering for a 'trail toolkit' certainly, and small enough to fit in a jacket pocket, never mind a bumbag or something...

However, I think as a 'replacement' or indeed 'upgrade' for the OEM kit, a decent ratchet, plus the bike specific tools (14mm hex/22mm socket) which aren't even included in the OEM are worth considering too for anyone planning a longer trip.

Jx

ps. leg is healing, slower than I'd like, but at least there is no pain... I'm hoping to be walking/driving again in a couple of weeks, and be at the Ace Cafe Overland Adventure Day on the 20th Feb - hopefully having picked up my Dakar bike from Patsy and be on my way home!

I always carry this set

plus a variety of other spanners and bits and bobs (funily enough never seem to use them for my own purposes!)
