Trax Panniers table

I've seen this cool pick nick table thingie in the Touratech catalogue: http://www.touratech.com/shops/019/i...822-0_I_01.JPG
Of course this only fits to their own Zega panniers.

I haven't found anything readily available for my Trax panniers. But I can't imagine it can be too difficult to bodge up something myself. I just need to make sure it is small enough to fit inside the pannier for caryiong. And to create "hooks" that fit nicely into the slots on my panniers for a stable table.

But before I dive in I was just wondering if anyone on here had already attempted a similar thing? It could save me some measuring and testing work

eehh, exactly! :eusa_clap:

do you have measurements on that?

theclowncrusty 27-01-11 09:58

What panniers are you using? I am away the weekend so will measure up for you when i get home Sunday night.

could it double as the base to your rear rack?

This is what I am doing...on a XTR H&B Rear Rack I am making a base 55x30cm out of 5mm Alloy to which some kitchen cabinet legs attach to, to convert it into a table when it is removed from the rack.

The table will only be 15cm high, but it will fit in my new tent nicely as well.

I am doing this at the moment, so pics when it is done.

I'm using the Trax Evo 37l side panniers.

My idea was to use them both for support and have an aluminium plate that can be carried inside one of the panniers as table top between them. No need for separate legs, takes up very little space in the pannier and offers a pretty large table area.

richardsracingmad 27-01-11 11:05

that sounds ideal for dinner parties, and more formal occasions:occasion1:

:D

How big a table do you actually need?

richardsracingmad 27-01-11 11:55

...its got me thinking about a drop-in leaf now........:massage[1]:

:110::003:

of course! Otherwise it would look totally out of place in our big tent-mansion. And our silk table cloth would be too big and where would I put all the silver candle holders? These things are important you know!

nah, the only reason I would use the 2 panniers as supports is that i'd have them with me anyway and wouldn't need to bother with also bringing legs for teh table.

richardsracingmad 27-01-11 11:57

it would have to be a reasonable thickness, so it wouldn't bow in the middle.

1.5mm should be plenty I think. The plate would not be that big anyway (remember I want it to fit inside the pannier). And it is not like I will be sitting on it either ;)

To qualify my "how much space do you need" comment, this is two people having dinner off the top of a single Yamaha pannier:

The other one made quite a nice side table for bread and wine bottle(s) :D

But if you want something bigger and more civilised, why not just carry one of these for 20:

...and use the panniers to sit on?

richardsracingmad 27-01-11 12:23

looks very cosy Dave, I like...:

1. The Blue and Pink Wine glasses :toothy1:

2. Thats one of 'em tarps that everyone's been on about....

uberthumper 27-01-11 12:26

We have matching waterproof oversuits as well (but not pink or blue) :D

Yes it has work for us as well. But I figured that if I could bodge something up that would hardly take any space in the panniers and provide some extra comfort, why not try it :D

We have a similar table already. Use it only when we go camping with the van. Even folded up it still takes up quite some space. And I'll already need to convince the missus not to bring half her wardrobe ;)

richardsracingmad 27-01-11 12:29

go 3mm minimum I think.

uberthumper 27-01-11 12:29

Fair do's. Not trying to be negative, honest. Will be interested to see what you come up with.

no worries, wasn't interpreted as such. Just trying to clarify why I am looking at this option in particular ;)

theclowncrusty 27-01-11 13:55

If you have linked across the two panniers, what do you sit on?

I should point out that the person in the picture is Mrs Uberthumper. I'm considerably less pretty :D

richardsracingmad 27-01-11 14:56

I can confirm that......and at that even, he's over-selling himself

So if I ever run into him we may both be wondering whether we are looking in the mirror, then :bricks:

Ok, time to dig this up from the dust again.
Finally gotten around to whipping something up, with the help of grandpa who still had some sheets of alu lying around.

The result is a spacious table, ideal for a romantic camping evening :slywink:

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/_MG_5525.jpg

It is pretty basic: 2mm sheet of alu cut to size with the corners bent to act as hooks to slot into the Trax panniers. The hooks are about 8mm long which will help if the panniers cannot be positioned nicely level.

Like it lots, BUT where do you SIT??????????????

That's why I use a small leg to support the table and then you can use a pannier to sit on, and my friendly camp shop has just given me (for a donation to his charity box) a small Thermarest sample mat which fits perfectly on the top of a box, superbly comfortable.

we have a set of small fishing chairs. They fold up extremely compact and weigh almost nothing. Nothing you'd want to sit on for an entire day, but perfect while cooking ad eating.
