I am using GIVI high screen and Touratech extension clipped on. I do not find buffeting as an issue any more.
What actually bothers me is the seat, that is not very comfortable for longer trips (2008 model) |
i went down the slightly taller screen (skidmarks i think - 40mm extra height) plus the HG crossbar bag. the bag help a fair bit. screen also.
aria tour x lid - you have to form and then glue a piece of stiff wire all around the edge of the peak - it removes the vibes caused by the wind and makes it possible to use. without the wire it vibrates way too much. not so noticeable with big winter pants on but VERY noticeable with just jeans on is the possion of your legs. i found that sitting very relaxed with legs open wide caused HUGE amounts of wind blast. tuck your toes onto the pegs and streamline them, it makes a big difference to me. |
Windflow around the fork
After reading another thread about this problem on this forum, I tried to find the bird comb to modify the airflow around the fork. None of the local stores had it in stock though.
However I wanted a Bagster tank cover and tank bag for my bike anyways, so I bought a Bagster Cross`r tankbag and a tank cover. That took care of the buffeting. 120km/h is no problem. It also gives me room to store some essentials when going on daytrips. I am 1.93m so I have also invested in a higher Kappa windscreen - thats the same as the Givi screen. I still get some turbulent air coming off the top of the screen, and possibly off the sides. I am considering trying a Kappa Airstream on it to see if that can improve it, but before that I am going to take the windscreen off all together. The reason for that is that if I stand up, my helmet comes out of the turbulent air which reduces the noise considerably. The solution for me might in fact be a smaller screen. As other people has mentioned, some turbulence comes fromt he general design of the bike with the very high front. The most silent ride I have had so far in motorway speed was on a FZ1N... |

you can get brackets to hang on the o/e fixing holes and bolt any screen you want on ... mine is a givi vee strom screen with a mra wing [surprise surprise ] the varadero standard screen is just as bad as the teneres ..so in effect you have to alter it or live with it ..the mra wing makes a huge difference but only if you get the right screen height and the right pitch it is now absalutly brilliant ..you really would be amazed how good this set up is ... and alsao very strange looking too i would say the vara is a great touring bike but if i want some fun the tenere is the winner hands down ...dont be put off by a screen thats simple to fix and it really is http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/7977/lakec.jpg By minkyhead at 2010-10-25 http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/6408/photo0051f.jpg By minkyhead at 2011-03-14 |

I admit I've not done any truly massive km in a day (650km one day was enough for an old fart), I'm with Keithblade. I think buffeting to some degree - which is all I suffer being 6ft - is acceptable, and is a damn sight better than not having any wind protection, at least. I do agree that there is instability under some conditions which might be attributable to the screen's aerodynamics (or lack thereof!), but it never gets out of hand.

has anyone tried fitting spacers under the standard screen fixings so that it sits proud of the fairing thus increasing airflow:pjrmoony_1JJHDG:and reduce wind ! might give this a try
still need to make a better spoiler just cant stomach the price of a TT spoiler |
I honestly don't have a problem with the standard screen. I think it is very good. I had 4 Varaderos and never felt the need to change a screen on them. I had a Trnsalp 700 and fitted a vario screen which did the trick though. I love my Ten. I think it's brilliant at tarmac and extreme off road.

Nor me stuxtttr. I have that issue with a lot of that type of gear. Admittedly I couldn't make it, and if I could not for the price, but there is economy of scale and the manufacturing equipment available to them and not so much to us. In some cases the cost of materials would probably be measured in cents, too. I think there must be a perception of value for money, and it could be argued that it isn't always apparent. |
In my case it worked to close the gap below the headlight.

The buffeting on my ten used to actually give me a headache, i removed the screen completely and this worked no more headaches.

I used the Skidmarx screen - much improved over standard until I smashed it!
Back to standard at the moment and will buy another Skidmarx.. |
I did buy the givi screen (which is exellent) and did the bird comb thing. works a treat. Also use a FAMSA tank bag for trips and motorways.... oh and now have a shoei xr1100 lid. Using all of these makes motorway and long trips enjoyable. I'm back in love with the ten.

Hello, i know this post has years... however, i would like to share with you what i made in my screen.
I cut a small hole and with a little bit heat i bend a little the screen allowing to some air go thru avoiding the vacum behind the screen... It works perfectly, i can ride 180Kph without wind turbulence. I'm very tall and have no problems. My original screen is a Givi. You can see some pictures in this link: http://www.clubextportugal.com/t7635...n-aerodinamico (it's a portuguese forum for XT users.) After the cutting, i put it some vynil over it so the finish would be nice. |
Very nice looking and great idea.

Can somebody point me in the right direction to see an image of the infill under the headlight to stop the buffeting please?
I think the only image I could find has disappeared. |
