Glowing downpipe !!

started my xtx yesterday in the garage, just to let it warm up for a bit, but after 5 mins at tickover i noticed the right hand side exaust downpipe was starting to glow a cherry red colour!! the other one was fine. bike is bog standard 07 model with original pipes. anyone got any idea whats wrong? dont know if its done it before, just noticed it as it was nearly dark. cheers T

they do glow, but are you sure that both headers weren't glowing ?

bigTrev 31-12-10 02:52

the other header looked ok but i,ll check again at the weekend. thanks

Doesn't sound out of the ordinary. I wouldn't leave any vehicle standing to 'warm up' anyway. Start it up and ride off, ride carefully for about 5kms in order for it to warm up properly.

There is nothing wrong with the headers glowing, its fine and wont hurt it at all.

+1

happens with all bikes if run in the dark and not moving, - would expect both headers though.

Perfectly normal - don't worry!

Thanks for the reassuring replies, took it out today for a blast, what better way to start a new year :laughing7: roll on summer :applause:

bigTrev 04-01-11 03:08

checked the headers today and they are both the same shade of red in the dark after about 5 mins idling, so all is well :laughing6:

But I guess the headers shouldn't glow on open throttle??!
Could a dodgey O2 sensor/lead cause the AIS to remain open? I may have "disturbed" it when replacing the exhaust seals.

They will if you're not moving and they aren't getting any air.

RickM 29-12-11 14:27

Odd then that this is the first time I've noticed this in 95,000 miles.
Checking valve clearance and compression at the moment then will try blocking off the AIS.

But then again you don't normally get to see the headers when you're at full throttle for any length of time - as you'd be going quite quickly!

RickM 29-12-11 22:59

No sir, they DON'T all do that.

I'm very observant then!

Hmmm?.....blocked the AIS but still no better..engine definitely hotter as well.

funny you should say that...
I have just noticed that the right
pipe is getting hotter than the left..

I have just put a metal mule 2 into 1 on
with the colour change from new the right
pipe is getting hotter than the left.. As the
right pipe is a much deeper blue gold colour...

Pic below

The colour difference is more than likely due to the different length headers (longer left - cooler) and from your photo they are a different thickness, the right one having a and overlap and a weld in it too. The right one also has a much tighter bend in it near the cylinder head too, therfore the metal will be thinner at that point on the outside of the bend radius. I'd suggest it is the pipe design causing this, rather than the way your motor is running?

RickM 20-01-12 17:54

I've just fitted a single MTC silencer so can now smell that the bike is running rich - so I'm assuming that the O2 sensor has died and is causing the ECU to run in "safe" mode. The resultant overfuelling would presumably be burning in the headers causing the glow???
