vibey sound when starting

Hello chaps

just a quick one:
I have a 2009 xt r with 750 miles on the clock,
I have only just recently noticed that when i start the bike up there is a rather loud vibration noise coming from somewhere in the engine (no idea where abouts).

It only happens when the bike is cold and being started for the first time,
e.g in the morning before work it will make the noise which will last approx 30 seconds. when i get to work and switch her off, i wait a few moments and try her again but she wont make the same noise.

Also it increases in loudness if i increase the throttle

Any ideas

thanks in advance

Andy

I've got a 2007 XTR and have noticed a similar noise like a buzzing sound.
It goes after about 20 or so seconds after starting from cold. This has only just started after the cold spell we have had. Not too worried and will see if it goes when the temperature rises

Some plastic bits can go a bit stiffer / brittle in this cold weather and transfer vibes that they might otherwise have dampened out my Z was a little buzzy during the cold snap before Xmas, but now it's back in plus rather than minus temps all is well. Have to add that I was going a little brittle in the cold before Xmas too

Roll on the summer :sunny:

yeah i have noticed that it was only happening during the cold, it had stopped for a long while now, since it had stopped snowing etc... however, i just rode over to france last week, where it was sooooooooo cold! (in falaise) and the noise had reappeared in the morning when i started it, now im back in england theres no problem!

strange though huh?!

Are you sure it isnt the fuel pump your hearing, its like a whirling noise like a washing machine!!??

If its more of a mechnical noise, im not sure. Ive an 06 XTR and never heard too much difference in noise when starting up even after it was out in sub zero temperatures for a while.

Sometimes (like 7 times of 10) in cold start mornings, I have similar resonanse sound. Lasts for about 20-30 sec.

Wouldnt be worried, these things make all kinds of strange sounds now and then - still they just keep on going :102:

It is the oil pump I heard that it is normal, I didn't have that sound but I have read on another forum of it, then I changed my oil to Motul and now suddenly it is there. I think it just needs to build up pressure then it go's away.

Cheers

I have had the problem before & found it was the one way valve in the clutch cover for the oil circuit, the valve was leaking over night & allowing the oil to drain back into the sump over night, first start from cold & the motor would rattle until the motor got oil pressure then the noise went away.

I did a full explanation with photo's of the problem on the forum a fews year back, I am going out now & will find it for you later.

Hi lads
i bought a bike 3 weeks ago and engine sounded spot on, bike only done 4,900 miles 2011 xt660x bike was kept in a worm garage. anyway i have had a loud noise plastic/rattle when i start the bike up from cold. its last 20 seconds or so. its about 2 or 3c here so is cold and my bike is my garage, but is as cold as the outside temp.i have been trying to find out what the problem is for the last two weeks, i have asked kev and so on, even ordered a new clutch to put in this week as the noise was not right and loud. anyway after reading your problem with and you saying it was only happening when it was very cold (i did not think it would be that at all) i put my bike in the kitchen of my house so would be nice and worm when i start it the next day, just to see if it made any difference at all, thought i may as well try as it cost nothing to give it a go.started the bike this morning NO noise at all ? not jumping up and down yet but think it was the cold and that's it. going to leave bike in the kitchen for the next 2 days without starting it. if when i start it the noise has gone, then it was only the cold. very odd but at least its not a real problem. will let you all know if the noise has gone in two days time.
