Tom - i'd wondered about that actually, didnt know remus did that - gonna look into it. Nice link too, thanks - i'll measure up and give them a ring.

Doug - a good point worth thinking about, i've considered it (and haven't discounted it yet) but thats the reason i bought used cans to do the job with, i could hollow out the second can with a clear conscience!

i guess i'll have to figure something soon - I'm meant to be going to Scotland for the weekend this coming weekend and this straight can is probably loud enough to scare the haggis up into the hills!

You could try some Exhaust packing to... er pack the exhaust out, keeps the heat off the skin and damps the sound a little bit. Will depend on the internals as to how easy it is to fit.

Hi Pete - Y'areet?

Aye, it already well packed - i got a load of exhaust packing from work when i first got the cans off Tony660x and repacked it to the max then.

It ocurred to me yesterday that I might be thinking about this too much- maybe its really simple -
I build stainless steel exhausts on cars at work, there's a simple rule for deciding what diameter of pipe (and what silencer internal diameter) to use when the customer wants a standard sound (quiet) from the car - 1" of pipe for every 1000ccs. So 2.0L engine = 2" pipe, 2.5L = 2.5" pipe and so on. If the customer wants it louder you make the silencer internals bigger.
My bike is obviously 0.66L but the internal pipe diameter of the CCC can i'm using is 2.3inches! I've taken the can to work, i'm gonna strip it again tomorrow and replace the perforated tube down the middle with a 1.5" one, OK so it's still bigger than the bike needs, even if you work on double the gasflow that a car would need, but its got to be quieter!

Anyway, my theory might be different, maybe my pipe diameter rule wont work and i'll mess up the performance of the bike, but its worth a shot - i cant see it reducing performance though, i remember looking at a 800cc Triumph Scrambler at the NEC show and the tailpipe on that was so small i couldn't get my thumb in it!

Be interested to see how you get on with that Mr Bog. When I first tried out different silencers on my Ten I used a Micron 'race' silencer from my Transalp which had a large inlet, but then stepped internals, a Micron straight through 50mm absorption silencer from a FireStorm, and an ex-BSB Remus Ti silencer with a 60mm absorption tube.

Of all of them, the 50mm Micron straight through was the loudest, followed by the Remus (which had a lower pitch, so may still have been loud but not sounded it), and then the ex-Transalp Micron.

I'm currently using the Remus on my project DR, and have made a baffle for it from part of a Remus link pipe, but if you can access perforated tube, do you sell it?

Just tickin owa canny, doin a few trail rides but you wouldn't thank me for an invite. Couple of times I thought "Would I do this on the Ten.... Would I fk". Will have to get another run up your way once I burn those tourances, give that ford a miss though.

I've got a CRD pipe off the TTR I could measure up/photo the internals, it's enduro sepc noise wise so not quiet or loud.

Well, i swapped the 60mm perf for the 45mm one today, its all assembled and on the bike but I didnt have a chance to try it as it was late when i finished. If the weathers not too ****ty i'll bike to work tomorrow to try it and post my findings.

Tom - the 50mm bore can was the loudest? oh dear - i might be on a losing streak here...
Aye, i can get perf but short lengths only as a favour from our silencer supplier, otherwise i've got to buy it in 3metre lengths, what you needing?

Skunk - glad you're keeping well mate, hang fire on measuring that can for now ta, i'll see how this one works out first. Be good to do some more trails, though i'm more or less decided on getting summat smaller/lighter for trails (read as 'summat that crashes cheaper'), it'll be summat round the 400cc mark i reckon. XR/WR maybe

3db louder = 2 times louder :)

About a foot, maybe 8". It was the 50mm that I used to make the ghettotrapp from, and I find that still a little loud, hence why it's no longer on the bike.
I'm not sure if the 60mm was quieter, or the tone was deeper and so it sounded quieter, if you follow?
