Nicely. Enjoy it.

Monday

Collecting a bike on a monday is so cruel - five days of sitting around looking at it. Friday is the day to collect, that way you can ride all weekend surely.

When I bought my XT660R, the salesman actually said to me, "nothing sadder than a new bike leaving the showroom on the back of a ute."

mac-cos 13-11-10 01:29

Or waiting 5 more days with not being able to sit on it look at it as it sat in the dealer workshop would be even worse. Pity the poor Merkins who have to wait until march to get thier butts on one.

CaptMoto 13-11-10 03:02

Really glad you are keeping it in the Yamaha family rather than opt for a lardy GS!

Well done

SelinaXC 13-11-10 08:18

Congratulations mac-cos - roll on Monday for you :)

Lol as I was an owner of the one of the 1st GSA1150s (pre lwr) I learned that lesson early. Owned for just under 2 years and bike was in the shop for issues about 9 times, some silly (dealer jet washed the decals off- Tank corroded but new one turned up un painted!) and some serious rear hub had large amount of play (5~10mm att wheel rim) has put me of that and the later 1200..
I've also tried the Katoom 950 (for 2 years ) and as its not changed much in 6 years it leaves me uninterested.
I have to admit I was put off the new S10 by the method of selling, price and mag reports that basically said it didnt have any innovation and was overwieght. Having seen that the press seem to have missed the fact its actually moved the world on quite a bit with the ABS and TC systems and that other owner reports have be glowing in the handling/usability stakes I think its been mis understood (certainly in the UK- not helped by the price ). :)

Well done mate very nice choice.

Denny 14-11-10 11:44

Well done fella, look forward to seeing the pics

Old Git Ray 14-11-10 16:42

Do yourself a favour when you get it. Find a flat gravel area, select S2 and whack the throttle open on a wide turn. You will end up grinning from ear to ear.

Then, find a steep gravelly slope, ride down it and grab hold of the front brake and be amazed.

You will love the security this bike gives you and just as importantly, so will your boss.

Its not as nimble or as fast as the 660 off road, but the slow speed agililty of this bike is incredible.
I am getting 45mpg on motorways and dirt tracks.

Enjoy and congrats

Congrats. Will be interested to read more owner reports.

Tim,

Have a look at the guy in Mexico.

He's as happy as me....

CaptMoto 15-11-10 12:00

I see the guy in Mexico still wearing the BMW gear :D

Skunkmoto 15-11-10 13:35

Nice day for it, sun's out not a cloud in the sky.

mac-cos 15-11-10 18:53

Well I have it. Covered the massive mileage of 20miles to get home. Roads appeared to be a touch greasy but its better than the black ice that was out this morning. Low sun hampered progress as Hornet DS peak not as good as the Arai TourX one for shading the sun. Had to shuffle the garage around to get it in as it was a smidge wider across the tank covers than the 660.
1st impressions over those 20 miles were it is heavier than the 660z but is a shed more stable and the CoG is a lot lower, the flighty top heavy feel the Ten can sometimes exhibit is replaced by a solid stable sensation. Seat lower than the 660z but suspension doesn't compress as much so higher than I expected and the suspension oozes much more quality in ride comfort/damping than the 660Z does (but we all know that was specced down to a price). Not a lot to add until I get a bit more use out of it, it still needs running completing so can't stretch the engine too much but its still grunty (even in Touring mode and full TCS) . Rear brake felt a little grabby but that could be compared to my 660 which was due some rear pads (I seem to use the rear a lot from the wear rate the 660 showed with the fronts only 1/2 worn).. Pics but it looks the same as any other one at the mo.

A NICE BIKE!!!!

Be careful on the roads, although I am the other end of the Country from you (normally alot warmer!), they have gritted the roads this morning, and it is icy underfoot.

mac-cos 16-11-10 10:27

yup its brass monkeys weather up here too. temp in sun says 10+ deg C but shaded ground underfoot has ice/frost and local weather online says -1 dec C. Think I may need to ACF50 it even if it warms up as the gritters will have salted the roads now, especially the spokes if Rays are anything to go by.

SelinaXC 16-11-10 11:20

That's gotta be a great way to spend a Monday morning mac-cos :)

Looking forward to hearing lots more about the bike in due course.

Nice bike.

You need to shrink your pictures though, they take an age to download (on my crap connection anyway). 800 x 600 pixels and under 200kb are what I use. I shrink them with BDsizer before loading them onto Photobucket.. Its freeware.

Good luck and keep it shiny side up.

Nice one Ray, Macca needs all the help he can get with IT..... :respeck:

Iain - Nice bike fella, I must confess that on more than one occasion I've considered chopping in the XJR for a silver one that's been in the dealers for a good while. Not the best colour, but it is growing on me.....

mac-cos 16-11-10 16:16

Daz you know I abandoned hands on /IT years ago, have a man to do that stuff for me.. :)
As to the Silver one go on go on go go go on! you know u wanna.
I think styling wise they gaffed by having tooo much silver including the rims on the silver bike. Shouldn't be too hard to change tank or side panel cover colours (yanks are getting a dark grey black side covers which look canny in the pics).
PS Ray I like em BIG... sorry bout ur crappy connection I'll adjust in future for the 3rd world resident members :D

midlife crisis 17-11-10 16:42

Please tell me that one of you lot will be bringing one of these dream machines to the Lakes next year???:eusa_pray:

mac-cos 18-11-10 08:43

Tempted but won't know if I'm free until closer to date. Also think bike would need new rubber if it's going to tempt Lakeland trails as tourance exps are very road biased , plus a sturdier sump guard/engine bars.

Already did.....by accident, this summer ...Doh ! Turned up with all my offspring and the bike at the same campsite purely by chance.

lol I'm not jealous, not jealous (ya bas :p) not jealous... (repeat like a mantra).
trying to get the last 300 miles of the running in period done on mine but now they have salted roads its a pain/worry (for corrosion) waiting on my ACF delivery to get it coated. relying on cold water rinse every day and WD40 coating at the mo.

Might be an idea to practice taking the pads out and spraying the disks too. Its actually easy, two 12mm bolts at the rear and 2 pins at the front. That way the protector gets in all the nooks and crannies. Just don't forget which way the anti-squeel plate goes in.

Just dont forget to clean it off before putting the pads back like I did some years ago ... Doh ! I tried to burn it off on the way to work and the disk broke (cracked right through).

Once a muppet....allways a muppet.

mac-cos 21-11-10 10:59

I had wondered if yamaha brake calipers were as corrosion prone these days as they used to be , siezed pistons a go go back in the early 90's after every winter . But I also I wondered how much ACF would creep or centrifuge and recoat areas you rather it didnt :D
I ended up keeping calipers and disks covered and sprayed the spokes from hub to rim.

So how are you getting on with it.

Have you tested that awesome ABS or the limit slip (mode 2) TCS yet ?

mac-cos 22-11-10 00:10

Ray I've had limited use due to really crappy weather , we seem to be under a snow threat at the mo (getting worse during the week), only managed ~100miles since pick up on monday over the damp and salty roads, though I was waiting to for the ACF to turn up before risking exposing the spokes to too much salt crap..
I've chickened out on testing ABS and TC just yet , still building up the balls to try .
Found the side stand a bit awkward to get out with out getting hung up on footpeg so fitted a CamelToe and its a lot better now, almost subliminal and it "solved" what felt like too short a stand (ie leans more than 660z). The cameltoe was a bit of a git to fit but got it on in the end.
