Xtz model history

Hi does anybody know the differences between the 2008,2009 & 2010 xt660z? 

uberthumper 09-11-10 16:48

Very little AFAIK.

- Graphics/Colours
- Seat is a bit different on the 09/10 bikes to the 08
- Oil breather catch tank is different.

Can't think of anything else off the top of my head. Anyone care to add to the list?

Early ones had wiring loom & rectifier problems, they improved the breather system on the later XT's & decals.

Do you know if they actually changed the rectifier plug on the later bikes, or just started plugging them in properly?

Kev 10-11-10 10:23

They have changed something as the new ones don't suffer from the problem.

I do think in some of the cases the actual terminals were the problem with low tension on them, causing resistance, melting of the plug ETC.

I have seen some Z's with water ingress in the rectifier plug where the seal has failed to seal. So there were a few problems why the Z would not charge.

As mentioned we have not seen any repeat failures

But not all old ones suffered either.

Agreed, but I would be checking mine if I owned a 2008 model.

I would replace the terminals & seal the connector at the regulator if I owned a 2008 Z, better than walking.

It would be nice to know what the change was (if one was made). That way those of us with newer bikes that have not yet experienced failure can stop worrying about it!

If you want peace of mind, just unplug the connector, check for any signs of overheating on the terminals, if you have it then approach your dealer, if you don't then simply pack with dielectric grease inside and out, clip firmly back in place and stop worrying.

There are far greater things to worry about, the ball, the child, the car at the junction, has this guy seen me....

I picked up my bike in May 2008, it's one of the very first registered bikes in the UK. It has never suffered this problem, which I attribute to being properly PDI'd before I took delivery. As Tom says, check it, make sure you put it back together properly then enjoy the ride.

what is the location of this plug? I had better check the joint has been made properly. I suppose I could find it but easier to ask.

Front, right hand side of the engine, below the horn. Black, rectangular plate with the rectifier behind it, loom plugs into the top of the rectifier.

There are different versions of the wiring loom, later ones being updates. That's what I was told by my local Yamaha service. They noticed that from the part numbers. My 2008 had this problem as well so I took it to the service this summer and had the whole wiring loom changed into a newer version as a guarantee work. And no problems with the charging anymore.

Just got my brand new Z last week, in white. And, surprise surprise, it's a 11d1 model, so 2008 make (am I right in assuming that?). They've already ordered the wiring loom, just in case it should melt. But, as Gas_Up_Lets_Go says, there are many things to worry about and they don't include the rectifier, at least as far as the road assistance works.

Martbike - congrat's on the new purchase.

Best advise is to take the reg/rect off and give the connectors a good coat of grease/acf 50/WD40 etc etc and make sure it's firmly clipped together afterwards. I'm not so sure about the plastic bag/rubber baloon sheath just in case moisture gets trapped in, but a shield of some sorts to keep spray out may be an idea.

I did this on my bike before I'd even ridden it and do check it periodically as it inly takes a minute, knowing what the end result can be..

Fortunately I have not had a problem, but I've done a rather pathetic 3.5k in my first year albeit in some rather horrid rain at times.

Just a thought, does the loom sefl destruct as a result of this connector being dodgy? If so you're fine if you sort the connector from day 1..

Enjoy the Ten'..
