Going the whole hog alone

Peeps,

Im a highly skilled mechanic "and modest with it" we all know that dealers are by and large a load of crap.

I want to do all my own servicing from the very start including the 1000KM oil and filter change and am going to email Yamaha for the official position on warranty if I do this.

Anyone any experience of what Yamaha's response will be? clearly they want to protect the revenue stream for dealers but I do long distance tours and want a bike that I know is maintained properly. Not left to some pleb who can't give a toss just so I can get a stamp in a book.

What say you?

Al.

You may as well get the first service done as it's free other than the oil.

Then do it yourself as you have 6000 miles for any problems to raise their head before it's second service is due then do it yourself.

Good point, I will probably do that but always been reluctant to let dealers near my rides. Too many bad experiences with them and so never trust them to even change the oil.

When you say you are a skilled mechanic, do you mean amateur or professional? If you are professional then you are working for "a firm" and therefore you can stamp your own service book with a genuine stamp.

In that case Yamaha would have no argument and your warranty status is safe.

If you are an amateur mechanic, then you've got no access to a stamp, you are compelled to have an authorized Yamaha or similar dealer to do the service for you during the first 2 years of your bike life.

ave got a stamp a`l lend ye... an am not kidding on...Man..if yer a good highly skilled mechanic like me a highly skilled worker o bricks an mortar...the same could be said about you when someone gives you there car or bike tae give it a wee service..... theres nuthin like blowin yer own trumpet eh!!!! :toot:its only gonna cost ye under 25 tae do it yerself.... so why wid ye even be thinkin o worrying about some other guy working on yer bike... when ye get it back wi yer stamp o approval fur the record... then go an do it yersel in a week... then ye`l sleep at night...:sleepy2:simple eh!!!!!! abet theres a few o us thinkin the same :3some:oh an bye the way it will need a good service as when it came off the production line, they revved it an held it there till the redline got brighter...plus 600 miles o gear changing....I dont know if whit capt moto said is true, as if there was a problem yed need tae jump thru hoops tae give them a a true an honest engineers report that the work carried out was by a highly skilled mechanic of the automotive agency of the brotherhood o bell.. a think its easier tae get Yamaha tae do it then,,, ye kin laugh all the way tae the bank.....:SpinHappy_15XK8L: not think so............C`mon , ye know ye want tae...

+1. That is what I did and I would do the same again, and again, and again...

No-one takes more care with your bike than you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks and apologies to the daddy for posting in the wrong area!

I will confide in you and tell you why I feel like this.:Christo_pull_hair:

All dealers are crap...........

My bike was delivered with 2 miles on the clock on Saturday, loose bar end weights, toolkit missing, wrong screw without compression limiter in one of the grey panels which I spotted was missing in the dealers and told them they better get the right one for the job, handle bar clamps closed at one end big gaps at the other. Tank has paint defect.....

Dealer has said he will fit new tank and supply tool kit under warranty but I have told him there is no way his staff are working on my bike following the standard of the work I have seen so far. so I await an answer on if they are going to let me fit the new tank myself (i suspect not). If they cannot assemble a few parts onto a bike out of the crate without loosing half of them and incorrectly fitting the others then they aint ever doing any other work to it. I will live with the defect (very minor) rather than let them touch it.

I am a skilled Engineer by trade and a gifted mechanic (not a motormechanic by trade) and most recently put a new clutch in and changed the crankshaft and gearbox oil seals in my boxer twin which is a gearbox strip to component parts job to get the seals in. Some of you will know that to do this on a BMW you have to take the bike almost totally to bits. I know that I am a lot better than any main dealer, and intend keeping the bike for 5 years at least so I dont need a stamp in a book from them if I keep all my receipts.

Oh, and I asked in my e-mail to the dealer in which I detailed the faults, the direct question
"Did you bother with the PDI as this would have shown up these issues"

In the reply this was totally ignored so I have now asked for a copy of the PDI doc. Shame to get off on the wrong foot with the dealer but I cannot abide people that deliver shoddy work. 90% of their customers probably don't know any better but some of them do!

For the warrenty side of things im not 100% sure but i would suggest that you maybe take it to another dealer for the 600 mile free service, i know this could be far away but from the sounds of that dealer :no[1]: i dont think many people would take it to him.

As for working on the bike yourself as you say your not a qualified mechanic which in yamahas eyes will mean anything you may have touched moded or done yourself can not be taken as proof or proper workman ship, meaning that will not cover you.

But i cant see there being a big arguement as long as all your doing are the normal service items like oil, filters, etc etc as these in most bikes are not were the problems arise from. Along with this i would keep a date of every time you do some thing with the bike and milage eg oil change and take maybe 5-10 photos each time you do something like this. Therefore if anything does go wrong you can say look i did X,Y Z by the book, heres the dates, milage, and photos for proof, and a normal bike should not have this wrong at that milage (if you understand what i mean!!!)

For me i got my R second hand from a local yamaha dealer and apart from buying the bike and parts from them would not take it to them to service, heard too many storeys of mechanics doing stupid things and also when the sales man tried to sell me the bike give me the usual sales jip about the bike being a bit single its got alot of lurging.....blablhlabl, i just said to him blanky, i may look young but ive read about the bike, they surge and at the begining that was to do with a faultly ECU etc etc..... his face said it all and he shut up then, let me test ride the bike and i was happy,3 yrs later and 42k miles ive done most of the oil changes, filters, etc myself but get a mechanic (not yamaha) to do the values as i havent learnt how to do them yet, tyre changes bearings etc.

Rant over .....happy biking

Ummm, picked up my new bike yesterday and have just spent the morning ACF50ing it and generally getting to know my way round it. Rear tyre pressure was 25psi and front was 20!!

Bike was on the shop floor so already assembled. Maybe the cleaner does the PDI's
