The location of the gravel byways on the Plain

Hi all..

Lee (offroadtoad) had asked for the details of the easy/gravel byways on Salisbury Plain.
These byways can be used on road tyres even if it's wet,and are well worth it as the views are stunning.
The ones on the Larkhill/Westdown Artillery range are usualy open three weekends out of four but the ones North of the Bulford Rifle range or open all the time.
If anybody decides to go for it,give me a shout and I'll check the range use info as the one from the Bustard Inn-Redhorn Hill is the best part of 11km's long.
First one....on Larkhill/Westdown so check dates.
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...6159&A=Y&Z=120
to-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...5369&A=Y&Z=120
The byway is all gravel and the MOD even filled in all the pot holes during the summer-
http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/j...d/IMG_4259.jpg
The next one will be a dead end if on road tyres/wet conditions....but still worth a ride down and back-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...3384&A=Y&Z=120
and turn around here-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...9894&A=Y&Z=120
http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/j...d/IMG_4041.jpg
The next one is the Northern Range road, and is open 24/7-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...4434&A=Y&Z=120
up to here-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...3709&A=Y&Z=120
and then West, all the way to Gore Cross-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...0989&A=Y&Z=120
The next byway is a mixture of gravel/tarmac and is open 24/7
Start off fron Gore Cross-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...0929&A=Y&Z=120
west to just above Bratton-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...1059&A=Y&Z=120
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...1059&A=Y&Z=120
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...2954&A=Y&Z=120
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...2954&A=Y&Z=120
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...0849&A=Y&Z=120
a nice easy ride with great views-
http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/j...d/IMG_4039.jpg
Another one near the Bustard Inn (open 24/7)-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...6714&A=Y&Z=120
to-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...4884&A=Y&Z=120
This one is on Larkhill so open dates will be required-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...4109&A=Y&Z=120
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...4994&A=Y&Z=120
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...4994&A=Y&Z=120
At this point, don't go left on to the grass, follow the gravel track around the trees to the carpark-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...6254&A=Y&Z=120
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...6229&A=Y&Z=120
More cto follow.

Still on Larkhill (range open dates required)-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...6229&A=Y&Z=120
to-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...7799&A=Y&Z=120
and here-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...8399&A=Y&Z=120
and two that go from the above point but are dead ends-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...8514&A=Y&Z=120
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...7234&A=Y&Z=120
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...9594&A=Y&Z=120
All the above are in the danger area's,so range open info is required.

This one is open 24/7-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...1819&A=Y&Z=120
to-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...2104&A=Y&Z=120
This one is open 24/7-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...2464&A=Y&Z=120
to-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...8419&A=Y&Z=120
and here-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...9159&A=Y&Z=120
to-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...9354&A=Y&Z=120
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...9864&A=Y&Z=120
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...9714&A=Y&Z=120
a bit of range road (it is legal to use the made up gravel tank roads)-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...9844&A=Y&Z=120
and coming out on the main road here-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...0939&A=Y&Z=120

All the above links are B.O.A.T's (byways open to all traffic) and are all suitable for novice riders using any type of tyre and in any weather. If it is wet though....your bike will get very dirty:088:.

And a bit to the South is the "Old Shaftesbury Drove"...again suitable for novice/road tyres with only a couple of slippery sections along it's whole length...well worth it for the views.
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...8494&A=Y&Z=120
to-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...3969&A=Y&Z=120
http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/j...d/IMG_4105.jpg
And if the climb up White Sheet Hill (at the Western end) does not put a smile on your face...nothing ever will.
:mbounce:

Cheers,
Andy.

Cor blimey, good work. will have a go at these very shortly. Cheers for your efforts.

offroadtoad 08-09-10 20:05

Andy, sir you are a top man. This must have taken a while to sort out so I can only say a massive thanks for the effort.

Even I, with my appalling sense of direction, should be able to follow this without finding myself at the mercy of the wardens.

I'll be marking up my OS map tonight :-)

Cheers fella

Lee

There will be three of us there from Friday the 17th until Monday the 20th of September. Ferry booked. Two Teneres and a KTM 950. Staying at the Tilshead campsite Thursday through to Sunday nights. Shaftesbury and Ox Drove on Friday with some other lanes off the plain on Friday as the Range is in use till 6pm Friday. Then Saturday and Sunday on the Plain. Road through Imber open that weekend as well.

Cheers and see you if your not busy?

You've picked a good weekend Dicky as it's the first time the Imber range/village has been open this year. It's normally open for a week at easter and two weeks during the summer close down in August, but for some reason they did not open it up.
The four ways on to the range are-
Warminster-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...6729&A=Y&Z=120
East to Gore Cross (this bit is all tarmac)-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...0929&A=Y&Z=120
and Bratton to the North-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...0839&A=Y&Z=120
via Imber village to -
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...8479&A=Y&Z=120
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...8479&A=Y&Z=120
Heytesbury in the South.

The Bratton-Heytesbury bit is trail bike/4x4 only.

There is a nice pub and garage with a jet wash/hot food in Tilshead and some great lanes to try...the one's up to and around the mock German village are great but hard going if very wet.
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...7249&A=Y&Z=120
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...7249&A=Y&Z=120
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...5459&A=Y&Z=120
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...5479&A=Y&Z=120
This one is o.k on road tyres even if wet-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...2759&A=Y&Z=120
and this is a great lane if dry but a lot of tree roots etc so not so good if wet on the bigger bikes-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...2634&A=Y&Z=120
again...this will be good if dryish-
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X...9644&A=Y&Z=120
and all can be linked with the Imber route.

I can't make that weekend as I'll be on a Somerset Cricket coaching course at Taunton.......but I know where I'd rather be!!!

Cheers,
Andy.

Cheers for posting all this up Andy . I can foresee a couple of hours spent with this thread, a marker pen, and my OS map of the Plain in the near future, followed by trying to figure out when I can get back down there.

richardsracingmad 11-09-10 10:44

So....the BIG question is.....

When's the next Salisbury outing???
