Luggage Racks - End Of The Line.

Hi All,

Yeah, I'm still alive... Believe it or not the reason i've been laying low is out of embarrassment, as i know i've let so many folks down who wanted racks. For that i'm truly sorry.

I ordered a batch of 20 racks in January from the the same engineering company as has always made them for me. I even asked for a small number of them to be anodised blue, as I noticed it's very close to the blue Tenere. I was told 6-8 weeks, as usual. 8 weeks came and went, nothing. Eventually after much pestering by me I finally received a delivery at the end of April. I eagerly opened the box only to be devastated to find that they were all faulted, every last damn one.

The faults are all superficial - the racks are still perfectly good for carrying stuff, but the quality just isnt there. I returned them all to the manufacturer, and the owner agreed that they'd made a massive foul-up. I pressed the point that this order was already overdue, and I needed the replacement racks as soon as humanly possible. I was told that the workbook for the following week was a little empty so it would be no problem to get them done quickly, two weeks was the promise. A discounted price was negotiated for the faulted ones and the phone call ended with an assurance from the owner that he understood my frustration and urgency. I chose to keep quiet about the racks i had, as I didnt want to offer people second quality goods after thay had waited so long, and anyway - i would have the proper ones very soon(?).

Despite a number of prods two weeks turned into an unfathomable three months, and ultimately it took six months to fulfil an order which was promised to me in 6-8 weeks. With no explanation or apology from my supplier I feel I have been left high and dry, not to mention furious and embarrassed. I am still trying to figure out how the same supplier who has been utterly professional and reliable in the past, not just for me but for my previous employer, has let me down so completely. If I had other supplier options I would have used them before now, but I dont.

I originally started doing these racks for a few reasons. I wanted a luggage rack and when I looked around I wasn't really taken with what was available. Availabilty of stock was another reason - I'd heard of a few people who wanted luggage racks but those that were in catalogues were not in stock at suppliers. As an added bonus i'd make a few pennies from it, whilst helping my fellow Tenere owners by keeping the price below that of others. In short, I knew that I could produce a quality item at a good price, which could be produced in a short time.

All that now seems to be completely out the window - if I cant get stock in a reasonable timeframe there really isnt any point. Letting people down is not what I wanted to do. So Ive decided that once the ones I have are sold, there wont be any more.

I have quite a few to move-

Faulted ones,
8 silver
8 black
4 blue

Faults are cosmetic - nicks, tramlines, uneven bead blasting - perfect if you just want something functional.
These will be sold for 25 each.

Proper ones,
10 silver
9 black
3 blue

These will be the usual 43 each.

Blue is very nice! I'll post some example pics of all the colours and of the faulted ones as soon as I can take them.

Once again can i say I'm sorry to the folks i've let down - i wont say its not my fault because it is, but I was let down too. Anyone who was waiting for a rack should have a PM from me soon.

let the flaming commence.
Pete Crossman.

SelinaXC 07-08-10 22:46

Don't beat yourself up Pete, let us do that for you :)
Only kidding, I'm sure everyone is very grateful for all your efforts past and present, when a previously reliable supplier goes t*ts up there's not much you can do,
Selina

Pete - that sucks Its hard to get anyone to do anything proffesional these days firms never deliver.

I am sure people will snap the racks up. I would be chuffed with a faulty one if I didnt already have a rack

are you going to look at producing other bits and bobs ?

ie chain guide ?

or has this all put you off ?

well done anyways :deathmetal[1]:

pete i think every biker has had a mis hap with a deliver company/dealer/stock stores etc at sometime and we all know how the usual deliver of X days/weeks gets waved and you end up on the phone giving :argue: to someone different every time who frankly im sure couldnt care as the deliver just never arrives.

I had a similar problem with a company i had order stuff from over the internet, usual 5-8 days delivery. 8 days later rang them up, oh this that and the other isnt a work day for us, so it will be another 3 days. Rang them 4 days later, or billys on hoildays (the guy i spoke to before) and must have forgot to tell you this that and the other. Ended up i waited about 3 times the length for the order, they didnt seem to care about how long it took, never said anything about discount/refund etc etc so i just gave the guy on the phone a :argue: to and left it at that.

Pete don't worry about it. 6 Month wait? Just change your name to Touratech and double your prices, people will be queuing up to buy stuff from you. :)

Why would there be a flaming?

If you haven't taken the money and held on to it (which I very much doubt 100 percent) I can see no reason why anyone would flame you for not being able to supply a product due to a third party. :icon_mrgreen:

Dont worry about it you wont be the first or last that this has happened to dealing in third party service levels and promises. I can think of a company that promises tomorrow, next week, its on it way etc etc and so on which you have not done.

With these last batch they will be limited edition! ..... Nice one hold your head up high :039:

A bolt on chain guide would be a great one if you are thinking of making one

Unlucky Peatbog - some things are just out of your control and if you're dealing with idiots, then it's even harder.

I'll have the 'not so good' one in silver.

If you can send me a PM, I'll send you the money..

Cheers

do you do a rack for my XTR??

redbikejohn 29-09-10 09:50

I'll have one of the normal ones. Note sure on colure, will post later as at work at the moment.

spm0912 29-09-10 17:34

For some reason I can't read your 1st post so can only surmise the story, but one of those racks looks perfect for me
How much are they please?

Steve

Peatbog 30-09-10 09:01

Richard- no sorry, only the Z.

Steve- the slightly faulted seconds are 25. Cheaper than I usually buy the racks in at cos I got them at a better price with them being faulted.
The 'firsts' are 43.
All three colours are still available in both options, postage on either is 4.50 for mainland UK. Anyone outside UK needs to PM me for a price.

Ta
Pete
