12V Relay DIY write up

Here's my DIY on wiring in a relay so my GPS and heated grips would turn off with the ignition.

Enjoy!

One note.. I thought about soldering the relay in, but then decided against it in case it fails, replacing a relay at home if soldered would be a pain, it would be impossible out in the bush. So female crimp connectors are the best option. Labeling the wires/connectors with their corresponding numbers wouldn't be a bad idea either if you plan on carrying a spare relay and wanted the ability to change it out quickly.

Oh yeah.. and a big thanks to Kev for pointing out the 12v power source under the seat, it works perfectly for providing switched power to the relay.

I've done something similar.

It's a squeeze but you can run the live from the relay to an auxilary miniblade fuse box and run each accessory via it's own appropriate fuse.

I went to these people http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.e...s/holders1.php

I have a little more room to play with as I've taken the snorkle out.

Good write up.

A huge thanks on this mate - I followed your advice on your post to fit the 12V socket with relay. I wanted to DIY it - ZAR400 for labour I could do myself. Went and bought as per spec all the parts.
Will post pics on http://mi-travels.posterous.com - not as neat as yours but everything working so you can have a look at your handiwork
Cheers

Why didn't you use the unused power source from under the seat and link it up to the GPS ???
