2010 xt660x cutting out

Hi Guys,

not sure if any of you can help, but I'm getting a regular problem of my engine cutting out on me.

Bikes only done 1300 miles, and every now and then the engine cuts out while I have the clutch pulled in.

It always happens at very low speeds, mainly if I'm filtering in traffic, and pull the clutch in. If if blip the throttle the engine makes a click and cuts off. It starts up again right away, in fact, each time I've been able to restart without interrupting the movement, but is a little worrying. Happened about 5 times so far always under the same conditions.

I'll be taking it back to the dealer soon to check it out, but just thought I'd see if anyone has any ideas so I can go in a little more educated?

Bike is completely standard, oil level good.

Any ideas?

thanks in advance.

JD

cutting out

this happend on my xt and i checked the tps position and increased the rpm to 1500 but would not of thought you would be doing this on a 2010 xt thats only done 1300 miles.

My 2006 XTX used to do this, usually when going down the box approaching a junction / roundabout. Was very unpredicatable, might do it a couple of times in close succession and then not again for ages. Just got used to it and dipped the clutch and started her again. Happily it's gone away now that i have MTC cans / PCIII / Stage 1 & 2 filters. I know it's been posted about before and is not uncommon.

Not that any of that babbling is of any help to you.... hopefully a grown up with useful advice will be along soon :)

Set your idle speed to 1500 rpm, can you remove your left black side cover & give me your full ECU part number, it should end with -11.

Johnny Dangerously 03-06-10 09:39

Cheers guys, I'll give all those a try. Kev, think we already discussed the ECU in another thread, but its the 2009 part number that ends in -11.

I'll have a fiddle with the idle speed at the weekend and see if that sorts it. Not a major problem though, just a little annoying. It never happens at a decent speed, only when trickling.

Good excuse for me to start modding a little I guess:)

No worries mate, I help so many guys out I loose track of every bodies bikes. I also have 100 customer problems a day to deal with at work everyday as well. Mmmm I need more memory.

Upped the idle speed today so it bounces nicely around the 1500 mark. Bike rides a lot better there for a start, and so far no cut outs. Thanks for the help guys, I'll keep an eye on it and let you know if it happens again.

I think I better become a supporter. I feel bad leaching info from you all without being able to give back.

No need to feel bad..... but if ya do join I'll bet it'll be the best tenner you've ever spent :) Mind you might lead to more spending in the mod department!

holy moly, I adjusted my CO setting up by ten this morning as well, and that has really changed the bike completely. I didn't think it would have that much of an inpact, but it's a completely different bike. It's gone from being 'something I'll live with' for now, to 'this is what I expected'! Now snatchy as you would expect a big single to be, but not crazy spluttery requiring the clutch at any kind of slow speed corner.

Blinder, means I can bump the Power commander down my list of wants a little until I want to start doing some more performance modding.

Thanks guys, very useful advice

holy smokes, shipping weight 74kg :emoticons:

Haha... you're missing something, its for server backup systems.

I've got 2 500gb drives in a RAID 0... very quick!

Just had EXACTLY the same engine cutting out as the OP. Happened once at 1200 miles, & again yesterday at 3900 miles. Almost exact same conditions: clutch in whilst coasting from around 40 - 50 MPH towards a junction. Dash went blank: apparently no electricity, no warning lights, no error codes. Flat, straight, dry road. 10 degrees C outside temperature, not raining, humidity normal. Motor not cold, but had only ridden a couple of miles. I have a Koso rev counter - it shows idle speed around 1430 RPM when engine is properly warmed up. I suspect the de-compression system cut in, but why the power should cut also...... If it happens again, should I wind up the idle speed a bit, to a little over 1500RPM??? Thoughts?
Bike has no mechanical mods & is 2010 model year.

hagland2431 15-03-12 16:12

how do you know when the idle is at 1500 rpm as it doesnt have a rev counter??????????
