pannier racks? anyone made one?
 

Basicly i need something i can fit with metal mule exhaust but for soft bags. I know all that touratech, otr and other 200� racks but i need something cheaper and i appreciate any idea

I have made some but I'm not sure if they will work with MM's...I had Carbon Cans on mine. I'll try find the thread I posted on them a while back...

I made one from an old Divvi 900 sports rack (Renntec) I had.

By inverting the grab handles and making small ally brackets the mounting of my Oxford Lifetime Panniers cleared the CCC carbon stubbies and still maintained a slim profile for weaving in traffic whilst enabling two hex screw fitting and demounting.

Cost - nowt.

thanks guys, denny yours are looking really sharp i'm just wondering would that be useful as a crash bar as well since im trying to give my best to offroad driving lately. And just to mention that MM is 2-1 exhaust. Montonacio do you have pics of your work?

Svele, they are pretty solid and I'd say they would cope well on a low speed drop...not so sure at speed though.

CCA posted a link in my thread, not sure if you saw his version. It's similar to mine with another bracket to the other exhaust clamp, but without the bracket to the passenger footpeg. If you made a set with all three brackets, possibly using slightly thicker rods, you would have a solid rack offering decent protection. Post some pics if you do make some :thumbsup:

My bluetooth is broken and I don't have my cable here in Spain but I shall post pictures when I can.

I swapped the grab handles from one side to the other and inverted them so that they form a sort of exhaust can crash bar which also pushes the panniers outwards at the top and allows them to hang vertically. The Oxford Sports Lifetime Panniers have enough weight and aerodynamics to stop them flapping even when empty at 80mph+ (on the way to my local(10Kms) shop). They are capacious enough to carry a full weeks shopping (inc. several bottles of :redwine:).

The small ally brackets simply turn the 45 degree angle on the Renntec mounts to 90 degrees ( I did not want to weaken the sports rack by bending) and slip under the hex grab handle screws with friction. I used some surplus corner brackets from a kitchen unit fitting kit. (you have to be inventive on a pension)

I bought a set of alpo panniers and didnt want to buy those stupidly expensive frames so made my own out of 3mm thick plate steel and 12mm thick round steel. I thought i posted on photos here but seems I cant find any, will take a few photos tomorrow night and post them up.

They do look a bit rough as i got them galvanised then i painted them but over a year of riding with them has left them a bit patchy.

I saw these panniers for sale on ADV Rider. They look really good, you would just need to supply your own mounts and adopt them. For $275 they'd be tough to beat.

I just made 4 holes in the pannier frame then lined these up and made 4 holes in my panniers, put some extra strengthing aluminimum inside the pannier and then bolt them to the frame. ive put a set of rubbers between the frame and pannier to keep a water tight seal and also stop the boxs vibbing. Takes about 10-15mins to remove the panniers but it was cheap

just to inform everyone, it more expensive to make your own racks then to buy original let's say kappa... Although i have soft bags this option was better and more solid and most important it's cheaper.

Not too sure about this, i got most of the steel at a cheap price as i bought a load of it, not just a few lengths. The welding etc was free and so was the heating equipment. Ok it did take a while and isnt as good as something you would buy off the shelf, but cheaper is never normally as good as off the shelf. !!

Funny you say that, as it didn't cost me a penny...well ok, I bought my mate lunch for helping with the welding. I guess it depends on what resources you have available. Even if I were to have paid for parts it wouldn't have cost more than €10.

my experience is based only on what i found here in croatia, the thing is that a people who do this kind of work don't want to deal with such a small job, i asked in a workshop how much would it cost me and the price was almost exact the same like this kappa racks..

seems that your mind is made up to buy it then
from my side it was much cheaper to do it myself and i got to make it the way i want it. custom brackets to tie down soft luggage, pltform on back for topbox type of luggage and much better cross support and support all the way down to the footpegs to make sure you do not put all the strain on the back frame
