handlebar steering damaged
Hi all,
when I came out of the venue last night , where I had to shoot a photography assignment , I notice somebody started kicking on my bike ... Seems they kicked the steering (on the oem handguards/crashbar) , so only a few scratches can be seen there since this is really bullet proof , However since the bike was locked (steering lock and disc lock) when you put the wheel into the straight position , my handlebar seems to be bended , or even worse the bracket holding the handlebar seems bended as well ... anybody had something like this ever ? it's national holiday here in belgium so I can't take the bike to the shop to check it , but I'm little bit worried of the cost , and if they would be able to rebend it , and at worst level , that my steering would be damaged ... or am I freaking out to much as is it probably just the handlebar that has bended a little bit , anyhow , still don't get it why people doing this, it was clearly no theft attempt , as this f*cker also kicked my brake pedal completely against the engine, luckily I could rebend this and drive home |
If the bars look straight & are off to one side. Loosen off the top triple clamp bolts (the bolts clamping each fork) then place the front wheel against a wall & push the bars in the opposite direction, this will twist the triple clamps straight, once you are happy with the alignment tighten the top clamp bolts again.

and just a question , it seems the space between the clamps is also a little bit difference, maybe only a few mm , (I mean the space between clamp and fork below) , but maybe that's normal due to the bending ? anyhow gonna try this .. oh and one more thing , should I be worried about the lock mechanism , could this be damaged ? I mean it' still functions well, but this is my life on that bike , I drive it daily and just like it be safe :) |
Had the same after I dropped it: steering bar is'nt bend but it is off-set / twisted some how. I discovered that one of the bar clamps / raisers was slightly tilted. Loosen the nut underneath the top joke / triple clamp that holds the clamps. Now straighten the steering bar and tighten the nut.
That fixed the problem... at least it did on that occasion. Few weeks later the bar itself was actually bent... .but could be straightened with a long lever. HJ |
The XT bars are very soft & can bend easily.

The site is very confusing, it seems to me you will need the mounting kit for 28mm and if you take the normal lenght version (not +20 or +30mm) all your cables will be ok.

The 'mounting' kit is basically a pair of saddles and bar clamps that fit around the 28mm clamp section of the bars, as the original saddles and clamps are for 22mm diameter... these fatbar 'adaptors' usually sit/bolt into the original 22mm saddles, thus offering a degree of rise too - usually 15-20mm. As the Tenere top yoke has bolt on risers, it is possible to replace the whole riser with a set that accepts the 28mm bars too of course. Hope that is clearer than mud?! J xx |

Hi,
I had the Magura EX fitted and its a class bar. Better shape than any Renthals I had since. The Magura clamps are a bit crude and chunky. Still using them now. Renthal's are nicer and cheaper. At original height everything fits. There are no locating holes for the switchgear. Just cut the lugs off. There is enough grip on the bar surface. Rob |
