It looks like the original WR400 fender.

mac-cos 01-04-10 12:50

Could you post up the list of mods/bits you ended up with to make them fit cheers! :)

stuxtttr 01-04-10 21:19

Sweet looking bike - me now thinks wr400 parts wont be on ebay very long:icon_smile:

Was it easy to do this mod ?

Gas_Up_Lets_Go 02-04-10 00:03

I feel like the prophet of doom these days..... but I do have a couple of questions;

* The WR400 is a bike of around 115Kg's the Tenere is around 210Kg's so that's quite a difference, what changes have you made to the compression and dampening on the WR forks ?

* With an extra 90mm of front travel, how close does the wheel come to the bike? (exhaust/rad/horn etc) and under full braking, is the bike still stable (doesn't try to end-over-end) ?

* The front mud guard looks very high at the front, in my experience when the leading edge is higher than the trailing edge the mudguard catches the air , kinda like a sail, and can make the bike handling like a real pig (I tried it with a TTR front mud guard on the tenere, a blue one looked awfull and the bike handled like a pig at speed!).

* What was the purpose of the change? did you have a specific goal, or reason for doing the work? Just for the pure hell of it? or something else?

dallas 02-04-10 04:22

Hmmm, nice job, but..... why not buy a WR in the first place if ya want an offroad bike? Why transform a Tenere into something it isn't? Yeah I know, 'cause ya can. But ya can better get a WR on the side and use the Tenere for what it is meant for: allroad ridin' and travels. But hey, everybody gotta do whatever he/she likes to do!

Yeah, but the brickwork doesn't seem entirely right though :002:

The Mudguard i fitted was a Polisport WR400 replacement. I had to fit it with the tow loop up side down with two nuts as spacers at the back to stop the back end snagging on the rad. No problems overheating. I took it out for some slow off rd technical riding and the fan didnt even kick in.

I bought a 2nd hand WR 400 front end. Forks, fork guards, clamps, wheel, break caliper, hose and master cylinder. I had the seat modified to look like a Cahedo design but had the Tenere logo painted on the sides. I designed the fork guard decals then had them made by my local sign makers, They are now in the computer so they are quick and cheap to produce.I put an oversized break disk and caliper bracket for the front break which is working very well. I had to modify the clamps by removing the existing stops and fitting new ones, also the holes for the stem top and bottom had to be altered to take the origional stem from the Tenere. Fat bars were fitted with motorcross grips and bark busters, Levers switchgear etc remain the same. Forks have stronger springs in, had to get them from America, I also used heavier oil but recent testing suggests i might need a lighter oil so i have more adjustability for road and off road. Also a set of Pivot Pegz were thrown in for good measure

Yes it was very easy to do this mod if you look at it from a bolting things together angle. However i did spend a lot of time taking measurements and drawing things out, the only real physical adjustments were the clamps, everthing else was standard or aftermarket WR parts, and thats what makes it so simple. If i want supersonic breaks i just order a motard disc, bracket and even the caliper as they already exist ready to bolt straight on!I did this on the cheap because i wanted to see how well it would work. I will be rallying this bike this year plus a long road tour so will let you know how it goes

OK, With the suspension you dont want to get too technical with things, keep it simple. The WR forks are designed for enduro and as such are valved to take an absolute hammering so thats one thing i dont have to worry about. so that only leaves what supports the bike and thats the springs, find out what weight springs were in the Tenere before and say another bike like the 950 Adventure, get some springs around the same weight and your not going to be far away. We put some heavier oil in but after testing, the suspension is great on road but for hard off road riding i had both compression and rebound fully out before the ride was satisfactory. A lighter oil i feel will give me just that bit more adjustability. No problems with things snagging, the front wheel follows the same line as the old so everthing is much the same. I did notice a slight weaving as the bike was at top speed rather like when you fit panniers, the front wheel has a slight buckle in it so thats what may be the cause. The reason for the change is that i want to do more rallys on this bike maybe even a desert rally. I did the Hafren last year and found the suspension didnt have quite what it takes for serious off Rd. I tested the WR suspension yesterday with some realy big hits, heavy landings from jumps and fast wooped out trails, it coped realy well, used all of its travel but didnt bottom out, (Unlike the rear end) so far i am pleased with the result. I cant afford two bikes so i need a bike which can do it all but with more off road ability than standard.Im taking it to Germany for a blast in May all on Rd so after that trip i will turn my attention to the rear end (Ohlins Shock- re mortguage)....

Basically, I now have a bike that does all of the adventure riding stuff both on and off road but with the added ability to take the bigger hits involved in high speed Rally riding. Also it is fulfilling my need to fettle and tinker which only other fettlers and tinkers will understand...

I do.

stuxtttr 06-04-10 16:07

Really this is the kinda forks the ten should have come with in the first place. or maybe Yamaha should have started fitting them what with the huge price increase they have put on the Tenere.

Great priced mod that would seem to transform the bike and make the front end better suited to off road ridding. Will also mean a cheaper front end to fix if you loose it off road half as many brakes to break.

The ten's speed off road is only let down by the suspension not being able to cope with the weight of the bike.

I think the origional suspension is a good compromise of road/off road especialy when you add a set of progressive springs to the front. This would be the route to take for most people and it would cope with most situations. Shaun from Touratech did a desert rally on the origional forks with upgraded springs and thought they were ok.They just dont look as cutting edge as the rest of the bike??
