Messy oil replacement

I just completed my own oil/filter replacement as the bike as 21750km and the warranty expires next week.

I had it done by the local dealer before.

I used to do oil/filter and all sort of work on my GSE500 and my VFR750, so I wasn't expecting any trouble.

but wow, this is messy !!!!

3 drains for the oil ! (frame, crankcase, filter drain)

I'm glad I saw it coming and had a lot of newspapers under the bike...I still managed to get some oil on the concrete in front of the house :p

Otherwise, pretty straightforward with decent funnel to catch/fill in the oil.

the best thing being: with the Yamaha aluminium bashplate, the oil drain is accessible without removing the bashplate, happy days :)

How do you exactly check the oil level (vertical position and a warm engine)?
Oil level looks much lower after the winter but I'm not sure if I check it right.

the owner manual says warm engine (10mn) and upright position and do not srew the dipstick, just remove, clean and insert without screwing the cap.

so I just sit on it (so the rear wheel is on the ground), after all the centerstand is an option so it shouldn't be used to check the oil level ;)

I always check the level after a ride: let it idle for a few moments, keep it upright(by sittin' on it), turn the engine off, wait a moment, unscrew the dipstick and measure the oillevel not screwing the dipstick in; always o.k., no sweat.

Thanks guys!

I was always checking the level after a ride and it was OK (1/2 between F and E). However last time I just turned the engine on, waited 5min, turned off and checked the level. It was at a minimum level. So maybe it was too short and the engine was too cold to increase the oil pressure. After a short ride the level was OK.

Do you change oil after winter? (mine was changed 5 months ago and I did about 250km on it till my winter break)

hi zou did you not get a 2 year warranty with the bike? i know you bought it else where etc. did that cause you to have just one year? very odd

zOU 27-03-10 19:21

oh I didn't check actually :p

well theres a 3weeks waiting time at my dealer to get anything done.... I'll say I was in Africa with no dealer nearby :D

try dealer locator @ http://www.yamaha.co.za/ ;)

I use the bike everyday to commute, so I need a dealer open very early or very late and able to lend me a bike for the day, which doesn't exist around Dublin apparently

so I have to use the only dealer close to my place of work, and rush there during lunch, leave the bike, take a cab back to the office and have a colleague to drop me there after work.

They're the only one accepting to do a bike service in half a day, all the other need your bike for several days (if not a week).
What kind of organization is that ?

When I bring my Tenere in for service and I cant wait on it, I always get a replacement bike; good service! This way I rode a XT/X and R, a TDM900, a Fazer 600, a Fazer 1000, a MT-03 and even a FJR! That's probably the advantage of being an exclusive dealer, which Van Meel Motoren is(and so they also do Yamaha rentals).

Just to confirm we should be checking the oil level with the bike level leaning on the side stand. I was sure I read that somewhere.

Why they dont just fit an oil level window like on my TTr not only can you check oil level quickly and easily but also see if there is any water in there.

I better go check with my bike level with handlebar resting on a wall.

straight up according to the service manual:
