xt660x or ktm 640 sm ?

I need a bike for commuting and am unsure of which bike to buy, I have around 3000 to spend and need something reliable and fun to ride. What would you recommend?
Cheers
Tim

XT!!!! The KTM is an ok bike but has a small fuel tank it will only go about 50 miles between fill ups.

Welcome along Armo.

I'll can't see you getting much support for the Austrian Orange bike here though :newspaper:

V-max?
The KTM will be faster, better equipped and require costlier maintenance. The XT-X will be slower, more reliable and have longer service intervals.
Depends what you can live with.

the KTM LC4 engines are awesome when fettled (cheap to do if you get right info ) and easy to service (locknut/tappet valve adjustment) two oil filters but still a piece of cake to do.
KTM WP suspension is also yards better than the yamaha stockers.
fuel range is short with the stock tank.
You should however be getting a newer bike with the XT if the price is the same.
I had my old KTM 640 Duke for 7 years and abused it over many winters and it was only at the end that it was starting to show some electrical gremlins .
I have a Ten cos Ktm dont have a equivalent bike and if they did it would probably cost 2-3k more, so I'd still have a ten :D.

Funnily enough, you'll get a pretty one-sided view on this forum ;)

As mentioned by some others, the XT service intervals are higher. But I think, contrary to what people will say, the build quality (paint, electrics etc) is poorer.
I think the KTM is more "desirable", so insurance is going to be higher and it's more likely to get nicked.
Riding an XT, you'll be mocked by the KTM crowd, but it feels quite good to beat one around a corner.

I'd say test ride both, get an insurance quote for both, and make your mind up that way.
My feeling is that if you do a fair amount of miles, the XT would be the rational choice, but who buys bikes with their head anyway? ;)

maybe this forum can only be shown to support xt.

XT.. Would be more economical and enjoyable, but really for you, :icon_wink:

My mate had a KTM640SM its a quick enough bike BUT it suffered handle bar weave at 100mph and it had more vibration than the XT servicing and parts were nice and cheep for the KTM so you pays yer money and takes yer choise.
Cheers Bear.

Get a test ride on both if you can.

Both bikes have there pro's and cons. If you going to be using it more often and for longer rides i would say Yamaha, but if you only going for a 10mile blast to work every day and dont plan on doing anything much more than that the KTM could be the one.
