My stock exhausts.

Now then, starting to get the hang posting malarky.

When I blip the throttle from idle, I get a metalic rattle coming from the exhaust baffles on the overrun, this is pretty loud. And not having seen another tenere, have nothing to compare it to. Just wondering if this is normal. Cheers.

Mine didnt sound like that when it had the stockers on.

das boat 22-01-10 16:30

Hi keithblade, no mate total stock bike, not added to it at all. It sounds like either something is loose inside the silencer's, or a really loud exup valve.
But don't think the tenere has an exup valve, does it?

banksy 22-01-10 16:35

I have the stock pipe on my 10 still and the only sound i get is it popping when the rev's fall back... Have you tried tapping the underside of the can with your hand with the engine off (AND A COLD EXHAUST!) to see if there is a rattle in there?

tripletom 22-01-10 16:38

No EXUP on the Ten. I appreciate you're saying the sound is coming from the silencer, but I found the small heatshield where the headers 2-1 had a longer bolt touching the header, so I swapped the bolts around and noise gone.

Hi Banksy, just been in the garage and gave that a try, solid as a rock.
The day the bike was delivered and the guy fired it up, i noticed it straight away. When i questioned him I got the stock "oh they all do that sir"
It's only when the bike's at an idle, don't hear it when riding.
Thinking a trip to the dealer's might be in order.

Hi Tripletom, I take it the noise i describe is similar to the one you cured. As soon as my mate clears his cbr out of my garage, I'll give that a go. cheers.

Something else it might just be.... On the end of the rear mudguard there is a little moulded peg that sits next to the bottom of the reg plate.. If there is a gap they vibrate together.. i ended up cutting the peg off as it was wearing through the back of the reg plate..

Use to be worst at tick over....

Hi Das Boat, my standard bike doesn't rattle at idle or anywhere really just the overrun popping they all do with the AIS. Could be loose cat inside the silencer.

Nelis 22-01-10 22:25

@Das Boat: I know exactly what you mean (at least i think).
My bike also has it sometimes, but i once saw another ten that had it a lot harder and even while on throttle.

Its not a popping sound, more like scrathing (hard to describe)

I heard a similar sound 2 weeks ago, but it disappeared before I had a chance to investigate.... I assumed something inside the silencer had come loose... but if so... how come it's gone now? Might well be some other part causing it.

Many thanks for all the help guy's. Will have to investigate the problem further. Hasn't really given cause for concern, that is untill i realised mine seems to be the only one with this (what i now think is a problem).

Going to spend the money I'd put aside for cans on the Firestorm on the ten, so maybe problem solved.

wimpster 23-01-10 13:36

They all do it with the stock pipes, its just the Tenere single blatting its way out of a stifling exhaust silencer-all big singles go blat blat blat-just ride the ****er

On our German XT 660 forum a user reportet an exhaust-sound like the threadopener above. What was it? It was a part of the cat that became loose and wandered in the can like a pebble.

Mort 30-11-12 08:49

Cut the silencer open ditch the cat.:byesmiley:

redbikejohn 01-12-12 18:34

Like already mentioned it sounds like the cat has come lose in the end can. see below. cut it open and take it out.
