Sorry for the delay everyone.
I'm held up with the tail tidy and the tail light and indicators that go with the Pod. I just need a few more days.

GStry 04-12-11 20:19

Pod pics are here, was unable to post pics a few days ago on xt660.com for some reason.

thats little storage box look very nice and neat n tidy .... looks tempting .. Gary . where in the state can I get one or in europe ?

stoic bloke 05-12-11 23:20

hi, very nice job GStry, looks like a lot of effort has gone into producing a real tidy tenere part, nice one!

GStry 08-12-11 15:26

Thanks everyone. I will post pics as soon as I get home next week with everything put together, taillight, indicators and the number plate.
Will be doing a trip up Sani Pass on the 18th Dec to test the pod and will then iron out any issues that there may be, after that wil start taking orders.

I have devided the pod into two halves with a bulkhead that separates the front from the back. This makes access easier and also leaves a secure area under the seat. (as well as adding significant strength)
The idea was to have the front area for tools, tyre levers and heavier items and a secure (relatively) for valuables. The back area for first aid kit wet weather gear that are quick and easy to get to, or on longer trips, spare tubes etc.
This would leave your panniers free from such things and constantly having to repack them after each overnight.

SingleMinded 08-12-11 21:33

Good thinking!

kinioo 19-12-11 21:50

Nice job, nice job!

I like the finish of it and I can imagine the amount of work you have put into it, however...

... i liked the first, smaller option bit more.

This one makes the tail loook bit heavy/bigger etc. but its much bigger (first one was hidden nicely) Its only my opinion and as I sayd very nice job anyway!!

Kev 20-12-11 09:48

Well done a great job.

GStry 20-12-11 15:13

Thanks Kev, it's been a long time coming, if I had known how much work it was going to be I don't think I would have done it.

Thanks Kinioo.
In reality though you don't notice it as much as you think when you are looking at the whole bike, it does blend in rather well.
The photo's are directed at the pod to show what it looks like, so it seems to stand out.
I could have shortened the back and made it a little smaller, and trust me, I
played around with it for weeks trying to find a happy medium.....this is not so much a thing of beauty but practicality. The back had to be a fair size to make access reasonable and I did try to make it look as good as possible.

It's hard to believe, but it's 18cu/L of extra space. To put that into perspective it's 9 2 litre cokes.
Travelling through Africa I don't think anybody will be to bothered with it being visible or not. 18 cu/L of stuff that went into a pannier is now going under the seat, space that was never used before... it will make a big difference to any long overland trip and the weight is relatively low down and in the centre.

duibhceK 20-12-11 18:43

great Mod!

I wonder if you could fix the license plate to the plug that closes off the storage space. Makes it a bit less visible and bulky.

Ni3ous 20-12-11 19:20

He cant, because license plate is too wide to fit betwen exhaust pipes.

GStry 20-12-11 21:51

duibhceK, I tried that but as Ni3ous mentions, it gets in the way of the exhausts, if your plate is legal.

Finally finished and pics to prove it.
I'm very happy with the result.
Have added two sets of indicators for better side visibility when turning. and two sets of tail/stop lights for better braking. Added reflectors tape to the rear hatch.

fair enough, it's a great mod anyway.
A Belgian plate would probably fit nicely between the exhausts, but yours does look a bit larger.

GStry 26-12-11 20:37

Thanks mate.

enduro374 27-12-11 17:21

Nice work.

I'm interested in one, so let us all know how much and when etc..

Could make an exellent extra fuel tank perhaps if it's fuel tight?

GStry 27-12-11 18:49

The Pod is R3000.00 South African Rand, excluding shipping (about 235BP) this includes the Pod, Tail Tidy, Tail Light, Indicators and the Resistors for the LEDs, all the nuts, bolts and spacers.

R2500, (195 BP) without the lights as there is a big choice out there and you may find something that suits you better. The Tail Tidy has been made to fit the Tail Light I have choosen but would think the same light would be available everywhere.
The exhaust would need to be modified slightly, as the exhaust mounting point moves back to the mounting point provided, shown in the pics. Many use this point anyway but I had to modify my Akrapovics which was not a big deal.

enduro374 28-12-11 18:59

Here's my rear - do you think it will fit OK?

Thx.

Yes, it should be fine.
You are already using the rear mounting point for your exhaust, so if you need to make any ajustments they should be minor.
It looks like the rear Tail Light you have is the same one I use in my Tail tidy.

MadDog 02-01-12 16:57

Here's a few pics of my Bike with the POD now installed, I am extremely happy with the results.

As you can see the POD is almost invisible on the black bike and just looks like its meant to be there. I still have to tidy up the wiring and the exhaust tips need a final tweak to get them lined up properly but all in all I am very happy with it.

Thanks to GStry for the fantastic work on the POD and all the assistance, I look forward to seeing what else you have in store for the 660z.

One more final shout out to Krish at Powerflow on the Bluff, The exhausts are fantastic and such good value for money. The workmanship is excellent and I also appreciate the time and effort put in on your holiday :) a BIG thumbs up *:thumleft:

Bike looks great MD. With your pipes you don't even see the pod from the side, well done you did a good job.
I have a few things in the pipeline :BaseballHat_LNY2EG:

oldmanthatcansee 20-08-13 12:21

Dusting off this thread a bit...
Are those amazing pods still available?
Rand to GBP is looking good making this more affordable to UK folks... a group buy perhaps?

GStry 20-08-13 18:47

Yes, They are still available.
Will look at a group buy as well, if interested.

oldmanthatcansee 22-08-13 13:20

GStry,
You've got pm...

El Forko 05-09-13 18:31

Hi GStry,

Only last night, I posted a piece in this forum reviewing all my mods and highlighting what I wanted to do next, based on 23,000km in S America on my Ten. I was saying that I wanted under-seat storage, and posted a link to 'an ADV Rider from S Africa who made a great pod a couple of years ago', before seeing this thread and realising it was YOU!!!!

How much would one of your pods cost me - still 3000 Rand / 2500 without light? And do you have one available to ship now (I'll be back on the road in a few weeks)? I have some rather nice LED indicators on the bike (from Touratech). Would they fit?

And the most important question (couldn't work out the answer from reading thro the thread) - Is it compatible with single cans?

http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps76450235.jpg

Gotta do my sums and check my budget before committing (lots of work required on the old girl whilst I'm pit-stopping here in Santiago), but would be good to know if getting one now is an option.

Thanks, mate,

Paul

GStry 06-09-13 14:36

Hi Paul.
PM sent

wuming 06-09-13 15:04

I would be interested in a group buy to the UK, if anybody else is interested to save a bit of cash?

oldmanthatcansee 10-09-13 13:18

Hi Wuming,
I'm almost ready to pull the trigger with shipping to UK, I'm based in London but surely we can arrange sth.
Some extra info from pm conversation with GStry:

If you have dual can setup (LeoVince in my case) right can link pipe might need extending by about 25-30mm to give enough clearance for the pod. My right can is offset to the centre of the bike so pushing it out will actually bring things into perfect symetry :)

Lenght of the compartments:
280mm tyre levers fit into front compartment, rear compartment is 315mm long.

I have one more question to GStry ... is the back cover threaded or do you need to unbolt 6 bolts to gain access?

GStry 10-09-13 15:06

The rear access is a marine hatch cover, it is waterproof and is screw on.
