More to the point, why would any manufacturer produce a twin cylinder rally bike? (larger than 450cc)... it was almost believable up until that point (well actually it wasn't, but you know what I mean...)

It's just another photoshop dreamer (albeit a talented one) - we've all seen those ideas in one form or another over the past couple of years...

All I can say is it better look a whole lot better than that in the metal!

Just what I dont need more technology on an adventure bike. I ride alot solo on adventure trips high in the Alps etc so the less technology the better. Yes the 660 has technology but not as bad as the 800 BMW GS with canbus.

Theres so much technology which isnt needed it makes it difficult to fix in remote areas. The old school stuff at least you have a fighting chance!

i agree, the concept of a 1200cc or even 1000cc or anything bigger than 800 is outragious for this type of bike.
Maybe everybody wish for Jap bikes to compete with BMW or KTM.
Only succesfull big bore i can think of is Super Enduro KTM 990, maybe thay must stop thinking of Super Tenere as a big engine bike...how about they start working on the 660Tenere and get it in under 150kg mark...

Common JMO, you have put the 660 through it's paces...dont you think if it was lighter it would have more power to weight ratio?

Or maybe the Super Tener idea/ dream/ wishes or whatever started from someone who wanted a Tenere so badly to keep up with the big guns from BMW.

Of course - then again, if it just had more power it would also have a better power to weight ratio too... (winking smilie x)

As I have said countless times to those numpties over on ADV rider - to equip a 650cc class dual-sport bike with a twin-skin (ie paintable) 23 litre tank, fairing, decent headlight & instruments, twin front discs, strong subframe (in the Tenere's case, a full steel frame), comfortable seat, decent pillion provision, grab handles, luggage capacity, big battery etc etc etc - you are going to struggle to get it anywhere near 150Kg... unless you make the thing out of titanium and kevlar!

It's true the KTM 640 Adventure had a pretty good stab at it, but the engine (while perky when not leaking or blowing up) was unrefined in comparison, and the pillion provision lacking when compared to the Tenere...

Of course if you are talking about a more dirt-orientated 660 Tenere, then of course better suspension, more power, less weight are all desirable - but I wonder how many people would be prepared to pay the premium price out of the showroom? Fortunately Yamaha have given us a great base machine to customise how we like - whether we want to travel, commute, green-lane, or even race (with a bit of work x), at a pretty decent price too!

Personally I think we are worrying needlessly about this new Super-Tenere - it is not designed to be a replacement for the 660, but offer the more road-biased and long distance (typically two-up) traveller a comfortable and refined everyday 'all-roader'...

As you surmise, those people who want to go off the beaten track seriously already know the 660 single is going to be far more appropriate for 'overland' traveling...

Of course it would be nice to think the new Super-Tenere would be a direct competitor to the KTM990 and all the performance (on and off road) that machine offers... but that particular niche market is very limited... I don't think we should be disappointed if Yamaha do build a 'Japanese GS' - just as long as they don't stop building the 660 for the more serious rider?

Hey, y'all! Here in Holland the word goes: the new Super Tenere 2010 will be launched february '10, costs around 16.500,- euro's and will be available only thru internet at first, in limited numbers(just like the V-max). Is this all true...wait&see?

I think with the 1200 it will be a strong battle against the GS and suited for the same type of travel. Mile munching globe traveller fully loaded up and covering the miles. Off road its got to be to heavy and big but good for fire roads etc and wide open tracks. I used my GS for exactly the same use but not for smaller tracks and one thing I didnt like was the fuel economy however it was a great bike. I prefer the Tenere 660 and it does everything I need so it depends what your after I think.

Whatever anyone buys its all about having fun and adventure I reckon so as long as your enjoying it go for it. I cant wait to see one and have a go on one. Im still sticking to the 660 as its a really good bike and I may as well of kept the GS if I wanted a 1200. BMW and KTM will have serious competition when its finally launched if they ever stop faffing around with silly pre production rubbish.
