Excess oil in the breather.

With around 27,000 miles on the clock the Ten seems to be getting worse at pumping oil out of the breather. The mechanic on our trip seemed to think that the reed valve on the air induction system may have got dirty and therefore allowing execs pressure to build in the crankcase.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

For a further explanation go to section 7-11 of the manual

Cheers
Scott

My 08 Tenere use to blow oil into the airbox quite badly, Was always taking the bung out of the tube to drain the oil from the pipe.

Got the 09 Part (catch tank between the air box and engine) fitted under warranty and the problem has gone..

Please explain more,
1)how or who determined it was a warranty repair ?
2) How did you identify that this part was the problem ?
2) Is the 09 part different ?
3) To make sure we are talking about the same part what part no are you referring to .

Thanks in advance
Scott

Scott, 2008 breather part #11D-E5371-10
2009 breather part #11DE53711000
I don't know who initiated the warranty replacement, there has been no recall, BUT there have been several people on here, including me, that have had it replaced under warranty.
The parts look different as well, the 09 breather has three (I think) snail shaped chambers formed into the breather.
It works.

I complained bitterly about this whilst my bike was in for the 'problem' but as the mechanic said it wasn't a problem they would not update to the new breather . I will have to buy one myself ! Stuff Yam UK, they are not consistent in their decisions and will not acknowledge any of the problems. Not one item that has failed has been a Warrenty recall, we the users have had to do all of the work ourselves despite items such as the cush drive ribbers, engine breather and reg / rectifier not being up to the job.

I went to my dealer with the two part numbers and some printouts of the pics from the original thread. I explained that I was having a problem with the breather pipe and that the new part on the 09 model fixed the problem. Dealer promptly checked and ordered the part and replaced it free of charge under warranty.

Yep, that was me who initiated this thang! As said, I contacted my dealer and he ordered the 09 part and replaced it under warranty, no sweat! And indeed, the problem of the always filled tube has gone. Mine was replaced at 18.000kms(june 09) and now at 27.000kms(november '09) still workin fine! Ya just gotta ask yer dealer and he must deliver, if he's a good one.
Greetz, Hans.

Thanks Hans. I've just bought an 08 tenere in the UK but live in Germany. I'm assuming my Euro Warranty will be honoured at any official Yamaha dealer in Europe right? (I'm aware from the post that they can differ greatly in helpfulness of course).

As I'm the world's dumbest mechanic, what would happen should I forget to let the breather tube drain from time to time? How often should I aim to do this? I intend trying to get the 09 mod part on warranty but haven't yet got my 'new owner' warranty card from Yamaha, so need to be aware of waht to do/not to do in the meantime.

Incidentally, has anyone used the Yamaha Assist breakdown cover? Any good? Can it be used anywhere in Europe?

Thanks guys (and gals)

I should have searched first

Found everything I need to know here.

I missed all this while on my travels in July.

Thanks man, you're right - everything I needed was there. Took me long enough to read it though. My goodness, there is such a vast array of knowledge and experience on this site, freely given and ever-so-helpful. THANX.

Just to clarify for the lazy if you do not clear the pipe then oil wil build up in the airbox. Even with my high buildup (high rpm motorway work) I did well over 3k miles without clearing it so you can leave it for a fair while at least.
