Power Socket?

Hi gang, what have you been doing to run a power socket? Looking at a GIVI satnav bag to put my car NAVMAN in. I and i need to sort out a socket for the 12V cig lighter adaptor.

The most obvious choice is a normal 12v accessory socket (fag lighter), these fit into the inside of the side panels, but you have to be very carefull as the diameter is the same as the space.

The other alternative is to use a 16a DIN socket, these are a smaller diameter - it's what I have. I use a 2 way 12v accessory extension with a DIN plug on the end. I run the extension into the tank bag and I can charge the phone, laptop (A5 netbook), camera, camcorder - anything that uses a 12v adapter.

You need to run up an auxillary circuit with a relay so that you it cuts power when you take the key out.

Hi GasUp,
thanks for the speedy reply. I am looking at the GIVI sat nav bag (or similar if anyone has any other sugestions) to hold my car NAVMAN and hopefully keep it dry, also i have heard that the buffetting is reduced as it blocks some of the air coming up the front of the tank.
Do you think there would be enough room in it to hold the other end of the DIN power wire with a female 12V socket, plus the connector i would normaly plug into the fag lighter in the car including the wire that would normally lead up to the screen?
I know i am a pian with all my qustions but i really love this bike and want to get the most out of it. Including some greenlaning and club camping,rideouts....

There is a post somewhere about this bag - I've no idea, I use a Zumo!

You can get the 16a socket (and plug) set from Halfrauds, its a bit pricy though (15-20). I tried a BWUU one at first but it filled with water and failed (on the German Autobahn of all places), I replaced it with the Halfrauds one and this one's been great. The normal car one costs a couple of quid, so it's probably better value, albeit less weather resistant.

So, we'll see you in Dent on the 7th? or (if you are really brave/stupid) St Mary's on the 20th ???

theclowncrusty 24-10-09 19:27

I have bought these off E-bay......

I will see when the socket arrives to see if it can be drilled for a drain hole. At the moment i should be at the Dent meet but trying to get the bike sorted for long distance and camping mode.....

I bought a givi bag for my trip this summer, fantastic bit of kit. I wired in a cig adpater direct from my battery under the panels and cable tied onto the central bracket near the light mountings.

Watch out you don't interfer with your sterring lock and also be careful when routing the wires, there are some hot parts you need to avoid.

Finally, it makes sense to wire in a switch to save the battery in the event of leaving it plugged in when your not running the bike!

HI IAWEBSTER,
i have ordered a power socket off E-bay. When it comes i plan to wire it into the inside of the grey plastic inner cover for the indicator, taking the live from a power lead i have already put behind the plastic cover underneath the headlingts. This will power a female 12V socket and then the normal car power lead should plug into that, my only concern is that there is enough room in the GIVI bag for all the spare lead..... This is ignition activated so should protect the battery. I really need to get this sorted as i went for a 350 mile ride around Wales yesterday and had to keep stopping to check the road map....... :(

There was room for a Becker 101 SatNav and all that stuff, if you want a quick fix.

Long term I would have added the socket to the bike, handy for other things.

The extra slack from the lead can be inserted into the givi bag behind the device very easily. Just watch the connector on the device, mine has bent slightly due to the position of the bag, might just be thats it's an old tom tom though.

Hi SKUNK,
i am hope to fit a power socket to the bike permenantly. But not full 12V fag lighter size. I am going to fit a smaller DIN socket that will have a DIN plug on one end going the a female 12V fag lighter socket for the SATNAV power lead to plug into.
Doing this for two reasons:-
1# the din is a bit shallower in dept so should be easier to fit.
2# the power connector from the SATNAV is quite large and does not look to be weather proof, so i wanted to keep it in the bag under cover.

Lol, thats what I was going to do, some plug socket ting from Maplins, but never got round to it, maybe in the Winter lay up.

Can take some pics of the bag with all the stuff in if it helps.

i got a normal car type 12v socket from Hein Gericke, Northampton for about 10. It comes with a plastic mounting plate to mount on a curved surface like the handlebars. The positive cable comes with an inbuilt fuse and it attaches to the battery with ring terminals. Also has a plastic/rubber cover to prevent/minimise water getting in when not in use.

I found it perfect for charging my phone/mp3 player/AA batteries when on long trips on the bike. Only issue I had fitting was extending the power cables for my bandit cause I wanted to run the wiring hidden under the tank. I also put a load of electrical tape along the bottom of the unit where the power leads come out, waterproof it a bit more.

Have come back this weekend from a great ride out in Yorkshire, the SATNAV got me there with no problem at all. The bag did suffer a little bit from condensation when it warmed up a bit on the way home but to be fair after all the rain it went through im suprised it didnt get washed away. LOL

The bag sits nicely on the cross bar of the handlebars, and on the XT660Z it stops a lot of the buffeting as it seems to block/divert the air flow coming up through the hole between the front of the tank and the forks. I am thinking of getting another another cheap bar bag to leave on the bike to cause the same effect but when i dont need the SATNAV.

Tuareg bag from Hein Greicke comes highly recommended for this. It's permanently attacahed to my bike and usually totally empty! Costs only a tenner.
