OEM Engine gards, replacement duration
Hi,
as stated in another thread my Tenere is affected by the broken engine gards. So after a long email exchange with yamaha UK (I bought the Bike in UK) I finally managed to get confirmation that I would be covered by the Yamaha warranty even if I live in ireland. So I went to the official Yamaha Importer 2 days ago (they had initially refused to help me) They agreed to take the engine gards. They will send the part to yamaha (where ??? I thought they were Yamaha at least for Ireland), Yamaha will then confirm the failure, and they will replace the part. I'm also going to leave them the sidecases as the locking tab/lever of one doesn't lock itself into place (so the cases can removed from the bike without the key. My questions are: for those who have been affected by the broken engine bars and had them replaced under warranty: what has been the process and how long did it take ? Samer for the sidecase warranty claim. I suspect that the Yamaha Irish Importer will not process my claim as efficiently as they could as: 1- I'm not Irish 2- I'm going back to them after having succesfully complained to the UK importer 3- I've proven them wrong Cheers |

I took the bike (with the bars fitted) to the local dealer, they took some details and some hi-res photos of the break. About three weeks later Yamaha had delivered the parts to the dealer. I've a pretty good relationship with the dealer (and they were very very busy), so I was permitted to take the bars away and carry out the replacement myself (the reason was I intended to stregthen the mounting before fitting) then return the brocken bars back to the dealer. I think the normal proccess would be to have the dealer carry out the replacement. It's a bit perculiar to have to return the parts first....... Although, and I guess it's a fair point, they are pushing back on warrenty replacements if the bars have suffered an impact - then again it's what they are designed to do, so they shouldn'y break anyway!! |
ok, 3 weeks :)
I've spoken to several dealers about it and they all told me that I had to make my claim directly to the Importer. They apparently don't get paid enough for warranty work (aka the time being allowed and paid for warranty work is too low to do the actual work). And honestly, I do not trust dealers. I've beem disapointed (and sometimes deceived) too often. I've already replaced the bashplate myself. |
so after 6 weeks, 5 emails and 1 fax (and several non answered phone calls) I had an answer from the Irish importer today about the engine gards (and the sidecase) I left with them mid october:

That's a joke, right ? 6 weeks to get engine gards a 1 sidecase ? I left the LHS sidecase with them for a replacement too. The locking mecanism broke. The sidecase can still be attached/detached but the vertical rear red tab doesn't lock in place when the case is closed. So anyone can remove the sidecase wether it's locked or not. I just realised that in autumn, and I had already been to Italy and back without problem. |
2 weeks later.. still no information and of course no parts .... -_-
|
My email to them yesterday:

Yamaha Ireland customer service = 0 I wonder who I could escalate that to.... |
New cases took a week to arrive as my locks and one lever didnt work properly.
|
forget replacement cases(not upto job) and got myself some tt zega pro. dealer (webbs at lincoln) couldnt be more helpful if tried. even offered to fit.
great service |
I got them on the phone today
( I have to email them, then print and fax them the email to get an answer. WTF ??) Sidecase are to be delivered soon... Engine guards are unavailable and they will not get them. WTF ? |
now the Irish Importer claims they'll never get them and that I have to ask for a refund from my original dealer.
Who doesn't want to give me a refund since they can't examine the bike. (Dealer in London, I live in ireland) WTF ???? |
What a nightmare mate sorry to hear of all your trouble, bugs me big time when you buy something off a global company and they mess you about, to them it would cost nothing and give them great PR if they looked after anyone buying their products and had a problem, next bike you buy will it be a Yam?
|
well, definitely not a yamaha in ireland believe me ^^

hi zou, jasus your not getting much satisfaction with either dealers, have you tried the yamaha importer direct [
http://www.yamaha-motor.co.uk/corpor.../yamaha_uk.jsp ] years ago i worked in a renault dealership, if a customer felt we were not dealing with the problem to their satisfaction a letter sent to the importer in swindon usually put the wind up us! many an engine / gearbox replacement rather than repair happened by using this direct approach
i know your problems are not helped by being in a different region but why should that be. a warranty should be honoured without jurisdiction. would a visit to a dealer in the north be any use? hursts seem ok to deal with, fancy a run up? i dont mind the spin |
I had ordered the OEM Engine guard halfway November from my dealer. Was on backorder at the time and would be sent out to the dealer halfway December.
Come that time I got a call from the dealer that they were still on backorder with Yamaha Belgium. The Delivery time they advertised was beginning of January. Got another call from the dealer last Tuesday: Yamaha will not send out any OEM engine guards any more because of "technical issues". It will take at least 3 more months for a replacement part to become available. I was a short call, so I don't have any further details, but I'm speaking to him again next week on the motor show in Brussels to try and get some more info. I'll probably just go for an after market model... |

I finally have my new sidecase (one with the new lock) so I've a old and a new model. But I lost all the nice stickers in the exchange :p I asked to be given back the engine guards as they're unable to get them and a fellow biker offered to weld them for me ;) I'm also in touch with someone here to get a new model 2nd hand when he will get his new part. so all is nearly well in the end. I talked to the importer about a service bulletin for the sidecase lock and he said he didn't get any... but as it took them 3 month to get me replacement sidecase I'm not going to leave the 2nd one with him :) But I'd fancy a spin up north anytime without any specific reason, i could still claim that I'm going to Hein Gericke or Crossans :p |
cool! cool! give us a shout if you want a run round cooley etc

Just had my locks on my panniers replaced at the local dealers after both of the keys snapped in both boxes within a week of each other.
Riding down the motorway at 70mph, heard a loud clanging noise, looked down to see that the engine bar had snapped in the middle and was dragging along the road still attached to the bike at the side of engine mounting point :118:. Yamaha have refused to cover this under warranty as I bought the bike second hand and don't have the receipt for the bar, cannot prove how old the part is and as the bike is now 18 months old, the bar may be the same age and is only guaranteed for 12 months! Been in touch with Yamaha customer service and after refusing to take no for an answer was asked to write an email detailing my concerns about the bike. Where to start: 1) pannier locks have failed leaving me with my stuff stuck in them making me late for work, boss was really happy! 2) Engine bar collapsed on motorway, but I lived to tell the tale. 3) Ignition jamming, will be changed under warranty, new barrel and ECU. 4) Spokes on front wheel rusting if see water! 5) Despite little niggles still a great bike!!!! |
OMG !!!
could they be welded back ? I have a set you could have for good price if you want, theyre just back from the welder as they cracked. I tappears that the new version is quite hard to get.. but there's still the aftermeerkat...err.. market |

Do you have any pictures? |
sorry no pictures, the engine bars were taken off in my local dealers, he thought it would be a case of ordering in a new crashbar and sending the old damaged item back to Yamaha Japan for inspection, not the case, I am still waiting to hear back from Yamaha customer services to tell me if they will pay for the new bar.
Will let you know the outcome. |
Don't wait too long, you're entitled to get your defective part back.
If it can be welded... I would understand that you've lost confidence in the bars... but, personally, I do not like the aftermarket one. |
Even after one of my mounts cracked on the engine bars, they still saved the casings when I put the bike down the road at ca.50mph...
|
I've heard stories about the fact that welding not only fixes but strengthen the (previously) broken bit.
|
Had an email back from the head of Yamaha Customer Services, they have agreed to pay for the engine bars, just a case of getting the bike back to the dealer and then waiting until the engine bar becomes available in April.
Things go wrong on new bikes, I understand this, but at least Yamaha are putting there hands up and putting right the problems. |
Can anyone recommend after market engine guard bars for the tenere - my Yamaha ones have also broken?

Engine bars are well documented in here, use the 'search' button to look fr what you want. Try; "Adventure Spec" "Touratech" "Off the road" for starters. (in the search box, use the " " around the word where you have spaces) |
Adventure spec

Thanks for the info guys. I reckon i might try and get them welded and then powder coated because the Yamaha issue ones seem to rust pretty easily. They did indeed break at the front, but also one of the front mounting plates sheared near where it is bolted through the frame.
