Engine guards???

Hi guys, i want to fit an engine before the winter sets in to protect the water pump and crankcases. I have found this one on E-bay.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Yamaha-XT660Z-...d=p3286.c0.m14

But i have heard that the original Yamaha product has been failing so i dont want to fit that one. Is the one on E-bay the Yamaha guard? If so could people give me a few pointers as to what sort of choice i have got? I only want the guard to go around the bottom half of the engine.
Thanks in advance for your replies....

Got yam ones fitted to my bike and np at all, fitted them as i do alot of offroading and one day managed to snap the waterpump pipe clean off when i dropped it, i was in the middle of knowhere, and the waterpump gaurd from offroad.de wouldn't have saved it either as it hit right at the top, with the engine gaurd its now protected..that is a yam one on fleabay by the looks, i believe the newer ones are modified slightly.

I have the OTR guard - it is a similar shape to the Yamaha one, but much stronger. It is more money, but I would say is worth it...

Hee hee - don't worry, the yellow stickers are on the hand guard spoilers now - I'll post a picture once I get the front end back together x

Hi Jaume -

Boy there is a lot to tell!

The best thing is probably to look at the dedicated thread:

http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=10925

...which chronicles the build up from the original bike pretty much from the moment I brought it back from the USA earlier this year - it's worth a read, even if I do say so myself!

If you have any specific questions afterwards, please just ask in that thread!

Glad you like it!

Hi Danial - I would say almost certainly, but you could always email OTR and ask them if they have fitted the centre stand with their bashplate?

On our RTW trip all 5 Tenere's had the new Yam crash bars, all 5 broke in the same place, on the front mounting.

For me there is no point in getting new ones, two of guys had them welded in place. The rest of us just left them broken

Duuuuuuuuuude! I guess this means you're home now?! How did it all go? Where is the ride report (I've been checking in to Russ' blog every so often) - I trust it was an amazing adventure?

Personally I've never seen the point of the engine bars (nor needed them), and I guess your experience of them proves they are of similar use to the proverbial chocolate fireguard?

I imagine the bikes are still being shipped home? Hope to catch up with you guys once you get your bikes back - maybe we need another Ace Cafe meet once I get back from Dakar too?

Glad you're home safe...

Good to see you're back, been following the blog as well. JMo, the engine bars are useful when you sling the bike down the road on tarmac, believe me.
